Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I work as a Level 3 Learning Designer at Morrisons, where my role is focused on designing and delivering learning that supports both colleagues and business performance.
On a day-to-day basis, I’m managing multiple learning projects from start to finish, working with stakeholders to understand what’s needed, designing solutions, building digital learning (mainly in Storyline and Rise), and then reviewing how effective it’s been once it’s live.
The role is varied, which is a big positive. One day I could be working on a full eLearning build or video content, and the next I’m collaborating with teams like Health & Safety or Operations to make sure what we’re creating is accurate and practical for the business.
There’s also a strong focus on improving learning over time, not just delivering it. That includes reviewing feedback, spotting trends, and making updates so the content stays relevant and useful.
Overall, the role is well-structured but still gives enough flexibility to take ownership, try new ideas, and influence how learning is designed and delivered, which is why I’ve rated this area 5/5.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I’m currently completing a Level 5 Digital Learning Designer apprenticeship, which supports my role by building my knowledge around learning design, theory, and best practice.
On a day-to-day basis, this involves a mix of structured learning, applying theory directly into my role, and completing coursework and projects. The biggest benefit is that it’s not just academic, I’m able to take what I learn (models, frameworks, evaluation approaches, etc.) and use it straight away in real projects.
The apprenticeship covers a good range of areas, including instructional design, learning theory, evaluation, and the use of digital tools, which all link well to what I do in my day job. It’s also helped me start thinking more strategically about learning, rather than just focusing on building content.
There’s a clear structure to follow, but enough flexibility to apply it in a way that works for the business and my role. It also encourages reflection, which has helped me improve how I approach projects and decisions.
Overall, it adds real value to my day-to-day work rather than feeling separate from it, which is why I’ve rated it 5/5.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I’ve developed my existing skills in learning design, particularly around structuring content more effectively and thinking more about the end to end learner journey rather than just the build itself. I’m also more confident working with stakeholders and shaping solutions based on real business needs, not just requests.
In terms of new skills, I’ve built a much better understanding of learning theory and evaluation. I’m now applying models and frameworks more deliberately, especially when it comes to measuring impact rather than just tracking completions. I’ve also started using data more to inform decisions, spotting trends in feedback and using that to improve solutions.
Overall, it’s helped me move from just creating learning to thinking more strategically about why we’re doing it and what it’s actually achieving.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The programme is very well organised with a really clear structure, which makes it easy to understand what’s expected and how everything links together. The modules build logically, so it all feeds into the overall role and end goal.
There’s a good balance between structured learning and flexibility, which works well alongside a full time role. You can apply what you’re learning in real time rather than it feeling like a separate piece of work.
Support and guidance are also clear, so you know where to go if you need help or clarification.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a high level of support from my employer. I’m given the time needed to complete my off the job learning, and there’s a clear understanding that the apprenticeship is part of my role, not something extra on top.
There’s also good support from my manager and the wider team. I’m able to apply what I’m learning in real projects, which helps reinforce the development and makes it more practical.
When needed, I can get guidance, feedback, and space to focus, which makes a big difference when balancing work and the apprenticeship.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive a good level of support from the training provider throughout the programme. There’s clear guidance on what’s expected for each module and assignment, which makes it easier to stay on track.
The sessions are structured well and give a good mix of theory and practical application. There’s also regular check-ins, which help keep progress moving and give an opportunity to raise any questions or challenges.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
It supports my role ver well and has a clear link to what I do. I'm able to apply what I’m learning straight into real projects, rather than it feeling separate or overly theoretical. It’s helped me improve how I structure learning, think more about the learners experience, and be more intentional with design decisions. It’s also pushed me to think more strategically about learning and how it supports the business, not just the content itself.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Morrisons to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Yes, I would. Morrisons offers a good balance of structure and flexibility, which makes it a positive place to work. There are opportunities to take ownership, try new ideas, and make a real impact, especially within roles like Learning & Development.
The support from managers and teams is strong, and there’s a clear focus on developing people, whether that’s through apprenticeships or on the job experience.
Like any organisation, there are always areas to improve, but overall it’s a stable, supportive environment with good opportunities to grow, which is why I’d recommend it.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Morrisons?
Be clear on how your skills link to the role and the wider business, not just what you’ve done, but how it adds value. Morrisons is very operationally focused, so showing you understand real-world impact is important.
