In my role as an Apprentice Surveyor, I support the delivery of a wide range of surveying tasks across both residential and commercial properties. My day‑to‑day work involves assisting with inspections, gathering building data, updating site notes, and contributing to technical reports. I regularly help assess the condition of properties, identify defects, and observe how senior surveyors analyse risk, compliance, and project constraints.
Alongside on‑site work, I contribute to desktop research, due diligence processes, and the preparation of documents for clients. My role also includes coordinating with internal teams, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring all work aligns with professional standards and timelines.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I thoroughly enjoy my programme and would rate it 5/5. The blend of practical experience, structured learning, and exposure to real surveying work makes the programme genuinely engaging and rewarding. I appreciate being able to apply what I learn directly on site and see my skills developing week by week. The support from colleagues, mentors, and the wider team has made the journey even more enjoyable, and I feel encouraged to ask questions, take on responsibility, and grow confidently within the profession. Overall, the programme feels well‑designed, motivating, and aligned with the career I want to build.

Throughout my programme, I have developed a wide range of new skills while also strengthening existing ones. I have gained practical surveying skills through site inspections, learning how to identify and record building defects, take accurate measurements, and support the preparation of technical reports. My understanding of building pathology, construction methods, and property compliance has grown significantly through both hands‑on work and structured learning.
I have also developed strong analytical and research skills, particularly through contributing to technical due diligence work, reviewing documentation, and assisting with desktop assessments. My communication skills have improved through working closely with senior surveyors, engaging with clients, and presenting information clearly and professionally.
In addition, I have enhanced my organisation, time management, and attention to detail by managing tasks, keeping accurate notes, and balancing on‑the‑job learning with programme requirements. Overall, I feel I have made substantial progress in building the core competencies needed for a successful career in surveying.

My programme is well organised and structured, which has made it much easier to balance my on‑the‑job learning with the academic requirements. The planned learning blocks, regular check‑ins, and clearly defined expectations help me understand what I should be focusing on at each stage. I also appreciate the consistency in communication and the clarity around deadlines, assessments, and progress reviews.
The structure allows me to build skills gradually while still being challenged, and the combination of practical experience, study days, and support from my team means I always feel guided in the right direction. Overall, the programme feels well thought out, supportive, and effective in helping me grow as an aspiring surveyor.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

The communication is clear, and I always know what is expected in terms of assignments, deadlines, and upcoming learning modules. My tutors are approachable and responsive, providing helpful guidance whenever I need clarification or additional resources to understand a topic.

Topics such as building construction, property law, health and safety, and building pathology have been especially useful, as they help me make sense of what I observe during inspections and enable me to contribute more confidently to reports and discussions.
The structured modules, assignments, and learning resources also encourage me to think critically and develop my analytical skills, which supports my performance in areas like technical due diligence and desktop research. Overall, the qualification adds valuable context, improves my decision‑making, and helps me grow into a more capable and well‑rounded surveyor.

Yes, there are plenty of extra‑curricular activities and opportunities to get involved in at work. There are regular sports activities such as football and rugby 7s, which are great for team bonding and staying active. The company also offers a wide range of networking events, allowing me to meet colleagues from different teams and build professional relationships across the business. In addition, there are team‑building days, social events, and work drinks, all of which help create a positive, inclusive atmosphere and make it easy to connect with others outside of day‑to‑day responsibilities. Overall, the variety of activities adds a strong social and community element to the workplace.
