I currently work as a Security Supervisor in the Burnley area, overseeing security operations across a variety of sites, including providing services for HMCTS court buildings. My role involves ensuring a safe and secure environment through duties such as conducting bag searches, using metal detection wands, carrying out both internal and external patrols, and monitoring CCTV systems. In my supervisory capacity, I manage day-to-day security issues, including handling redline investigations, supporting return-to-work processes, conducting interviews, taking detailed notes, and leading disciplinary meetings. I also regularly participate in weekly team calls to coordinate operations, address ongoing concerns, and ensure consistent standards across all sites.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy my programme to a great extent, as it allows me to develop both my practical skills and leadership abilities within a real-world security environment. Working across a variety of sites, including court buildings, keeps the role dynamic and engaging, while the responsibility of overseeing operations and handling day-to-day challenges adds a strong sense of purpose. I particularly value the opportunity to build experience in areas such as incident management, team coordination, and professional communication, which continue to support my personal and career development.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Since completing my Level 3 First Line Security Manager apprenticeship with a distinction and moving on to the Level 5 Operational Manager programme, I’ve continued to build on both my existing skills and develop new ones. I’ve strengthened my leadership and management approach, particularly when it comes to overseeing teams, delegating responsibilities, and making sound decisions in more complex situations.
My communication skills have improved as well, especially when handling formal meetings, difficult conversations, and working with a wider range of stakeholders. I’ve also become more confident in dealing with investigations, performance management, and day-to-day operational challenges across multiple sites.
Alongside this, I’ve developed a better understanding of planning, organisation, and the bigger picture of how operations run effectively. This has helped me take a more structured and proactive approach in my role. Overall, progressing onto the Level 5 has given me more confidence in my ability as a manager and allowed me to step up to a higher level of responsibility.

My programme is well organised and clearly structured, which has made it easy to follow and stay on track alongside my full-time role. The learning is set out in a logical way, building from core management skills into more advanced topics, which has helped me apply what I learn directly into my day-to-day work.
There is a good balance between coursework, practical application, and regular check-ins, which keeps me focused and accountable. The expectations are clear, and the support from tutors and the programme team has been consistent throughout. Overall, the structure of the programme has helped me manage my time effectively and continue developing my skills in a steady and manageable way.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a good level of support from my employer throughout my programme. They give me the time and flexibility needed to focus on my studies alongside my day-to-day responsibilities, which makes it much easier to stay on track. I’m also supported in applying what I learn in a practical way within my role, which helps reinforce my development.
There is regular communication, and I feel comfortable raising any issues or asking for guidance when needed. My employer is supportive of my progression and encourages me to continue developing my skills, which has had a positive impact on both my confidence and performance at work.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
