Systems Engineer Review

Working as a Systems Engineer means your role will greatly depend on your team. You might be designing or testing, or evaluating your project depending on where in the life cycle your project is. For me, there was a lot of verification work at the end of the project, which meant a lot of testing and checking that the design criteria had been met

On my first project, I had certain tasks that I was expected to do and I had a lot of responsibility. Once I moved I noticed I had much less to do, perhaps because the pandemic had greatly disrupted the communication and day-to-day function of the team as we worked remotely

I learned a lot at the start of my placement, including Python and new programming skills that built on what I had from University. I also had to learn the how to carry out the testing on the project, which was very new to me

It really depends on the team you are put in. Any flaws or weak links in the support network were greatly amplified because of the pandemic, so it really varied. My transition to a new team was an extremely isolating time for me, and I found that I had to seek a great deal of help myself as the infrastructure to help me adjust felt non-existent

It's hard to say, as most of my placement has been remote. For the time I was in the office, there were very few people in. That made it very difficult for me to know. I was told how things were normally all the time, which seemed a lot nicer

I really wish that there had been more planning in how to keep the placement students connected and supported during the pandemic. Hopefully with the new summer intake this is something taken into consideration, as I have really struggled since the start of the 3rd lockdown. In terms of the work, it was engaging and helped me apply my degree, but it really depended on the team I was in
