Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am a BEMS (Building Energy Management Systems) Engineer Apprentice. My day‑to‑day role involves reviewing technical documentation such as design drawings and specifications to understand how systems should operate. I also spend time on site, particularly when projects are live, where I assist with installation, commissioning, testing, and fault‑finding of BEMS systems. This helps me gain hands‑on experience while developing my understanding of how designs are implemented and operated in real building environments.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I have really enjoyed my apprenticeship so far. From the beginning, I have been actively engaged through volunteering opportunities and hands‑on learning on the job, which has helped me develop both my technical skills and confidence. I also take part in frequent site visits, which I find extremely valuable as they allow me to apply what I have learned in real‑world situations. The flexibility to work from home when needed has been a great benefit, and the team I work with has been the best part of the programme they are very supportive, friendly, and create a positive working environment.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Throughout my apprenticeship, I have become much more confident when communicating with others, particularly when speaking to colleagues and contractors on site. From a technical perspective, working alongside like‑minded professionals has helped me think in different ways and improve my problem‑solving skills. I have also developed strong time‑management skills, especially when working to deadlines and coordinating tasks effectively. Overall, I am continuously learning and upgrading my skills as part of the programme.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Initially, there was a department change, and before this the structure of the programme was not entirely clear to me. However, with the support and guidance of my managers, colleagues, and the apprenticeship team, I was able to understand the programme much better. Since then, the structure has been well organised. The balance between classroom learning and site work has been very effective, as it allows me to apply the theory I learn in class to practical, real‑world situations on site. This has helped put everything into perspective, and overall, the programme now feels well structured and properly in place.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a lot of support from my employer. Whenever I need off‑the‑job or on‑the‑job training hours, I am able to access these easily by asking. I am also well supported when completing assignments, if I need to attend site to gather evidence or carry out specific tasks, my employer is supportive and arranges for me to go to site to complete the work. Overall, the support I receive makes it easier to manage my apprenticeship requirements and progress successfully.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive good support from my training provider. We have frequent reviews, which give me regular opportunities to discuss my progress. If I have any questions or need help with coursework or requirements, I am able to ask and they are always willing to support me and provide guidance where needed.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
My qualification directly supports the work I do in my role. The knowledge and skills I gain through my training provider are exactly what I need, and I can clearly see this being applied on site in real‑life situations. Much of my day‑to‑day work involves using what I have learned through the qualification, which helps me understand systems better, work more confidently, and perform my tasks more effectively.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are many extra‑curricular activities available at my workplace. We are given five volunteering days each year, which I have used to attend careers fairs and support younger students by promoting apprenticeships and early career pathways. I am also part of the Early Careers Brand Ambassador programme, which has helped me develop my personal brand, confidence, and professional skills. In addition, there are regular networking sessions and social events, which are great for building relationships across the business. We also take part in annual social events such as the Office Olympics, which helps strengthen teamwork and creates a positive working culture.
