Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
In my role as an Account Handler within Howden’s Global & Corporate Risk environment, I focus on delivering high‑quality client servicing by supporting renewals, new business, and the preparation of accurate documentation such as market presentations, summaries of cover, and evidence of cover letters. I work closely with clients, brokers, and underwriters to gather information, resolve queries, and help ensure risks are marketed and placed effectively. I’m also responsible for maintaining precise data across internal systems, producing compliant documentation, and assisting with tasks such as credit control and chasing subjectivities—activities that help maintain smooth internal processes and uphold organisational standards.
Operating within Howden’s collaborative, people‑first culture, I play an active role in supporting the coordination of complex global and corporate insurance programmes, helping clients navigate diverse commercial risks. My work demands strong communication skills, technical understanding of commercial insurance, attention to detail, and the ability to perform well under pressure. I also contribute to wider team objectives through reporting and involvement in ongoing projects, reflecting Howden’s emphasis on initiative, accuracy, and exceptional client service. Through these responsibilities, I support the firm’s broader mission to deliver bespoke, high‑quality insurance solutions across international markets.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Howden to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend Howden to a friend because I’ve genuinely experienced its people‑first, employee‑owned culture, which creates a warm, supportive and empowering environment. People don’t just stay for the role—they stay for the culture—and the ownership model really does make you feel invested and trusted. I’ve also found that Howden takes professional growth seriously. There are structured development opportunities, clear progression paths, and the chance to work on meaningful, varied challenges across a global business.
I’d also recommend Howden because the entrepreneurial mindset means I’m encouraged to think independently, be curious and find creative ways to solve problems, which makes the work far more engaging. The company’s continued growth creates real momentum and opens up new opportunities, and the flexible working practices and strong client‑focused ethics make it a modern, principled and rewarding place to build a career.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Howden?
If you’re considering applying to Howden, one of the most valuable things you can do is familiarise yourself with the culture before you join. Howden places a strong emphasis on being people‑centric, collaborative, and entrepreneurial, so understanding what that looks like in practice—and reflecting on how you naturally work within such an environment—can make your application far more authentic. Spend time reading about their values, employee‑ownership mindset, and the type of behaviour they celebrate internally. This not only helps you determine whether the culture fits you, but also strengthens your ability to articulate why you belong there.
It also helps to get clear on the role you see yourself thriving in. Howden has many divisions, specialisms, and career paths, so taking the time to explore where you genuinely want to develop (rather than applying broadly) will set you apart. Be ready to explain not just what role you want, but why—and how your strengths align with it. This shows intention, self-awareness, and long‑term thinking.
The key is to show that you’re not just applying for a job—you’re intentionally choosing a culture where you can contribute, grow, and take ownership.
