Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.

This four day insight programme at Howden provided me with a hands on introduction to the global insurance market through a mix of interactive sessions, practical exercises, and professional networking. I explored the real world impact of the industry through case studies focused on the marine sector, as well as a charitable perspective through Humanity Insured, while rotating through job simulations across underwriting, actuarial, broking, and claims. My favourite experience was a site visit to Lloyd's of London and a strategy risk pitch to professional underwriters and brokers, which sharpened my communication, teamwork, and commercial thinking. Set within a supportive and welcoming culture, the programme successfully bridged the gap between theory and practice while equipping me with clear goals for my professional

What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?

We had session that also help identify our strengths and how it can be utilised effectively within a team. Whilst having time for self reflection alongside made it more immersive when exploring the different roles. As it helped me actively question what route in insurance I would wish to pursue. But most importantly the people first nature was evident, especially when there was many senior staff willing to give time to host talks.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

All the employees who took time out from their day for the workshops were lovely. They answered all my questions with attentiveness, but also broke down more complex concepts into language that I can understand. I really felt Howden's want for me to be included and give a stepping platform to perform in the industry.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?

It was my first insight experience so I came in quite nervous. But instantly I got to know everyone through ice breakers and a demystifying insurance talk. The pacing of the programme was good because it helped me build the foundational skills, which then I could apply at the risk presentation at Lloyds. They made it easy as possible for me to attend the event and always willing to help. What I particularly enjoyed was being 10 minutes early so I could have general conversation. That sense social of social interaction layered with technical analysis in workshops helped create a great balance for the programme.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Howden

It is okay not to come from what you might think is a typical academic background for insurance. Identify what your strengths are, but understand how they work within the wider context of a team. It is also important to be effective at utilising other people's skills to work collectively towards a shared goal. Display enthusiasm by highlighting times you have been curious, as well as your ability to apply and improve new concepts, which demonstrates an entrepreneurial mindset. If you are trying to understand how insurance applies to you, consider that a lot of global infrastructure and major industries rely on it; this is a great way to overlap your personal interests with the industry.
