Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My role within National Grid is Apprentice – Fitter. No two days are the same being a fitter, one day I will be climbing & maintaining a 66kV Transformer and the next I will be completing some protection testing in a distribution substation. There are a lot of different things I do that all require different skills, behaviours and knowledge. Challenges that I have faced whilst working in this role include; being able to complete all the work on time & working in difficult weather conditions.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I have really enjoyed my time and are still enjoying my time at National Grid. This has hands down been the best job opportunity and training course I have been apart of. It has allowed me to meet new people, develop so many skills and also do a jo that most people wouldn’t be able to do.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, I have learnt a variety of skills and also developed existing skills whilst working at National Grid. One of the many skills I have developed here is being able to understand the fundamentals of electricity and then applying it to the work I am completing. In order to do this I will use a variety of tools that I have never used before. These include; 5kV Megger Tester, Ductor Tester & many more. I have also developed the skill to work with a variety of different people from different backgrounds and disciplines, this has helped me communicate clearer and helped me work towards completing the end goal safely.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
Personally, I have had some issues with my training programme, this is due to lack of trainers or courses overlapping with task repetitions for example. However, the overall structure of the training course is great! In the first year you attend a lot of courses and will do all your college work, this allows you to gain an understanding of the types of things you will be doing. In your second you will then spend a lot more time out on site. This has allowed me to gain the hands on experience.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I have all the support I need. I have been designated a mentor, assessor and line manager. All of these will happily answer any questions or concerns I have regarding my apprenticeship. Not only that, everyone in my team is also very happy to help out whether it a Technician or craft staff.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
The same goes for the training school. Everyone I have met and spoke to at the training school is always willing to answer any questions and sit down and talk things through.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
This course has allowed me to gain a load of different skills, behaviours and knowledge that will certainly help me in the future with my career goals. Not only have I gained skills that relate to electricity and National Grid, but I have also gained skills such as being able to create a presentation and present, its allowed me to understand the importance of completing things on time, to be able to speak to people that I may not speak to ever and many more.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
At the Worcester depot we have regular social events, these include bowling and pub quizzes. However personally, I would enjoy if they had some kind of 5-a-side football group or even a running group that starts when work finishes.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend National Grid to a friend?

It is a great place to work where you will gain a variety of skills and meet people and do things that most people won’t.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Grid?
Just to be yourself and be willing to put the work in
