Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Since working in HR, I have found each day to be different and the tasks I've carried out to be challenging in a positive way. I deal with staff by way of leading on learning and development, supporting with recruitment, absence and disciplinary/grievances. I have also learnt how to use our HR/payroll system and now support others in learning how to use this. I get involved in wellbeing as well.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I have found the level 5 HR apprenticeship to be very insightful, it has helped me develop my knowledge on human resource practices, why we have certain things in place due to legislation and best practice. It has helped me understand my organisation more and I can see where we fit in to certain areas, such as with things like pay/rewards or recruitment.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Definitely, I have improved my communication skills working with staff members at a variety of levels from officer/operative up to chief executive level. I feel that I have strengthened my organisational skills through studying alongside my day to day role, as well as the role itself being varied and incorporating lots of different tasks with different priorities. Team-working has definitely improved through working with the immediate HR team to carry out pieces of work, as well as with other stakeholders to reach a suitable outcome.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
My programme is all online based and I have check ins every 5 weeks with my tutor and 10 weeks with tutor and line manager, I am given deadlines for when lessons need to be done and also for when I need to submit assignments etc. so I feel that it is as structured as it needs to be.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My line manager is very supportive and gives me the allocated time to carry out my lessons/assignments each week, also they allow me to get involved in aspects of work to support my learning and generate evidence for my portfolio.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
As above, if I raise that I would like to do some training to support myself or carry out work to complete my apprenticeship then it is discussed and booked. I have catch ups with my manager and an annual appraisal also to discuss qualifications and training, so I am able to regularly discuss qualifications.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
It has helped me develop my knowledge around HR practices and understand more why we have to do certain things, and allowed me to feel more confident in decision-making and providing answers to staff who have questions on certain things.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
We have a really good wellbeing calendar and events are put on regularly for staff to engage in- I have taken part in steps challenges, staff awards and social events (e.g. bowling), I have played in organised football tournaments (internal and externally representing the organisation) and also networked with other people in similar roles in other local authorities across the East Midlands.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend South Kesteven District Council to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I have been at SKDC for 9 years now and I think the people who I have worked with have been really friendly and supportive, the managers I have worked for have always supported my development and pushed me to improve and step in to new roles. There is a culture of learning here which can be seen across the organisation at varying levels, we also have a real variety of work that we carry out in terms of services (ranging from waste collection, housing, environmental health, economic development etc.) we also have great benefits to working here with a good pension and 26 days holiday plus bank holidays (going up to 31 days after 5 years service) and the wellbeing provision is really good and engaging.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to South Kesteven District Council?
By way of an application, ensure you list examples of how you meet the person criteria so you can really stand out and prove you have the skills needed for the job you are applying for. You should be keen to learn and open to embracing opportunities, there is a variety of work dealing with different people so you learn a lot along the way.
