Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
The apprentiship starts at the on site academy, learning the required skills and getting practice at the techniques and spending 1 day a week at College. After about a year, we're SQEP tested and sent out on site, spending 2-3 months in various departments and the different requirements they have.
Currently I'm reviewing the emergency lighting building plans, updating them to match the existing infrastructure and testing the physical systems
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
The training at the skills academy is quite good and covers the wide range of skills in detail, while having sufficient facilities available for large groups to all get the required practical training. However once out on site the amount of available work to do varies from dept. to dept.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I had already done the level 2 course before I started, so most of the initial learning was more of a refresher. I have learned mostly data entry and H&S measures that are required for AWE

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The apprentiship was expanded for our year - so much so that there has been difficulties finding enough on-site departments suitable to place us in and the relevant learning tasks have had to be spread out. This is exasperated due to most of the electrical jobs actually being contracted out to EMCOR
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
The tutors have made every effort to be available when we need them, and have regular meetings with us to get feedback. We also have pastoral support for any personal issues we may have
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
Due to the limited tasks available my training managers have had very chances to support my practical learning so far
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
it has been especially useful with working on and around industrial equipment, as that has a different set of dangers from residential and requires a whole different safe working ethos
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
yes, but I'm not involved with them

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend AWE to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Assuming you pass the apprentiship, it is a well paid position and they're willing to offer support with higher education if you wish it
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to AWE?
- can take a bit of getting used to the security restrictions and what you can/can't talk about.
- if you're unsure about something, ASK. There are more, and seriouser hazards here you don't wish to encounter
