Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
So my role, day to day is to test software which will be released on the Costa Express machines around the UK. In total, we have over 15000 machines all over the UK serving Costa Coffee daily. My main job role was to test software which was planned to be released over the UK and other regions such as American, Ireland, Malaysia, China, and so on. This role was quite exciting as I was able to see the software which I tested live in production when I would go to get coffee myself from one of the machines.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoyed the programme as It was very hands on which I like. I was able to test the software, but also the hardware features such as ensuring the machines meets the capabilities it should, and that it operates correctly.
I also liked that the apprenticeship gave me a lot more hands on learning. An example of this was that I was able to learn new topics on the course learning, and then actually go into work the next day and test those features and apply them to my work, and see the benefits from using those tools.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
During my Level 4 Software Tester apprenticeship at Costa Coffee, I have gained a range of new technical and professional skills while also developing the abilities I already had. I have built strong manual testing skills by creating test cases, writing test scenarios, and executing tests across different Costa digital products. Alongside this, I have learned automation fundamentals, including how to write and maintain automated tests and use automation frameworks more confidently. I have also developed my understanding of API testing using tools such as Postman, which has helped me validate backend functionality and diagnose issues more effectively.
Throughout the apprenticeship, I have also strengthened my understanding of the software development lifecycle and Agile delivery practices. Working within Agile teams has helped me become more confident participating in sprint ceremonies, engaging with cross‑functional teams, and understanding how testing fits into each stage of development. I have improved my defect‑handling skills by learning how to identify, analyse, and log defects clearly, as well as contribute to discussions around root‑cause analysis to support long‑term solutions.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The programme has been well‑organised and structured, providing a clear pathway of learning that builds progressively over time. The training content is delivered in a logical order, starting with foundational testing principles before moving into more advanced topics such as automation, API testing, and test management. Regular workshops, scheduled learning sessions, and practical assignments help reinforce each stage of learning, and the structure makes it easy to track my progress. Communication from the training provider has been consistent, with clear expectations, deadlines, and support available whenever needed. The programme balances theory with hands‑on experience effectively, allowing me to apply what I learn directly to my role at Costa Coffee. Overall, the structure of the apprenticeship has helped me stay organised, motivated, and confident in my development.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I received a high level of support from my employer throughout my apprenticeship. My manager and wider team at Costa Coffee consistently provide guidance, feedback, and opportunities to apply my learning in real testing scenarios. I’m encouraged to ask questions, join meetings, and get involved in different parts of the testing process, which helps build my confidence and experience. Regular check‑ins ensure I stay on track with both my apprenticeship requirements and my day‑to‑day role, and I always feel comfortable reaching out for help when needed. The combination of technical support, mentoring, and access to resources has made a significant difference to my development and has helped me progress steadily through the programme.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive a strong level of support from my training provider while working towards my qualifications. They offer structured guidance through regular check‑ins, progress reviews, and one‑to‑one sessions that help me stay focused and on track. The tutors are always approachable and responsive, providing detailed feedback on assignments and clarifying any areas I find challenging. The learning materials are well‑organised, and additional resources are available whenever I need extra help or want to deepen my understanding. Overall, the training provider has been reliable and supportive, ensuring I have everything I need to progress confidently through the apprenticeship.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
My qualification has helped me perform significantly better in my role by giving me a solid understanding of core testing principles and modern testing practices. The training provider breaks down complex topics into practical, real‑world learning, which makes it easy to apply directly to my day‑to‑day work at Costa. Concepts such as test design techniques, API testing, automation fundamentals, and Agile methodologies have directly improved the quality of my testing and the confidence I have when working within the team. The programme also reinforces best practices around documentation, analysis, and defect reporting, all of which have strengthened my overall effectiveness as a Software Tester. Overall, the qualification has provided both technical knowledge and structured guidance that support me in performing my role to a higher standard.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are a wide range of extra‑curricular activities and development opportunities available at work, and they’ve really helped me grow both professionally and personally. Costa offers internal and external workshops that allow me to expand my skills beyond my day‑to‑day role, whether it’s through technical training sessions, professional development workshops, or wider business learning opportunities. I’ve also had the chance to take part in speaking events, which have helped build my confidence and communication skills while allowing me to share my experiences with others. In addition, the company hosts awards ceremonies that celebrate achievements across teams, creating a positive and motivating environment. There are also general networking opportunities and community events that encourage collaboration and help build stronger relationships across the business. Overall, these activities make the workplace feel engaging and supportive, and they provide plenty of chances to grow outside of my core responsibilities.
