Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I joined as a commercial Trainee within Kier and I am about to start my third placement job in just 7 months! I am working with experienced engineers and getting an insight to what they do everyday. I have got stuck in to the work they are doing - completing VCR's, Tender assessments, design reviews and more with the people in my team. I also get to visit live sites to see how the work in the background corresponds to real work on site. I have also attended careers fairs at sixth form colleges to inspire the the cohort into a career in construction and what Kier have to offer.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

Most of the reason my placement with Kier has been so enjoyable is the range of knowledge from my co-workers and their willingness to spend the time helping me understand the task I am doing. There is always something new around the corner for me to get on with leaving me excited to go to work the next day on a Sunday night. I am treated like a real professional and not just 'the apprentice' .

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Using new software every day gives me a chance to learn industry standard and how to adapt to live changes on a project. Communication in a working environment has been a huge skill I have been developing to ensure my voice is heard and that everyone understands what is going on. Each day can be so information dense if you pursue it due to the vast range of experience in the office!

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Rotational placements in different disciplines which is great for learning the industry as a whole and not just one part of it. Self led in terms of what you want to experience which is good.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

Various points of contact to support my learning and as stated, co-workers always there to give a hand.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Good contact for emails and short queries about the course but haven't seen a way to contact lecturers which could be helpful on my future assignments.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

KSB tracker allows me to asses the tasks I am doing in work and see which elements of progression I am working towards.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Loads of stuff from the Emerging talent team to organise events to network with other apprentices and members of the team. Social nights in the office which are a good chance to get to know each other. Lots of webinars to support your CPD along the way are also available.

Would you recommend Kier Group to a friend?

Yes

Why?

Great opportunity to learn the industry and just get straight into the job. I think this teaches adaptability which university alone cannot always recreate. Many benefits are available with kiers reward scheme and the people are very friendly.
