Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am currently in my final year as a chemical sciences degree apprentice I am working in the Fragrance Technology team (a really exciting new aspect of the business!). Given the nature of fragrance as a synergy of art and science, there are lots of evaluation sessions I attend (basically, I smell things and describe it!). From a Chemistry standpoint, I am directly leading a technology development platform. I use analytical techniques both in-field and out of field as well as exposure to new statistical techniques.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I greatly enjoy my programme because it blends scientific depth with creative, sensory work. Leading a technology development platform, applying advanced analytical and statistical techniques, and working in the innovative Fragrance Technology team keeps the role varied, engaging and genuinely exciting. The mix of hands‑on evaluation sessions and real responsibility in R&D has made the experience highly rewarding.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes — I’ve developed a wide range of new and existing skills. I’ve strengthened my analytical capabilities through advanced instrumental techniques and expanded into new statistical methods for modelling fragrance behaviour. I’ve also built strong sensory‑evaluation skills by participating in regular smelling sessions, learning to describe and interpret complex odours. Alongside this, leading a technology development platform has significantly enhanced my project management, problem‑solving, and cross‑functional collaboration skills.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme is well‑structured, with a clear balance between academic learning and practical R&D experience. The rotation through analytical, statistical, and sensory‑evaluation work is organised in a way that builds skills progressively. Having defined responsibilities—such as leading a technology development platform—provides structure while still allowing space to explore new areas like fragrance evaluation and novel analytical techniques. Overall, the organisation supports both autonomy and guided development.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive strong support from my employer. My team provides regular guidance, opportunities to learn new analytical and statistical techniques, and the freedom to lead meaningful project work. I’m also well‑supported during fragrance evaluation sessions and have access to experts across R&D, which has helped me develop both technically and professionally.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
I receive a reasonable level of support from my training provider, but there is room for improvement. While the academic content is strong, communication can sometimes lack the structure and responsiveness expected from a full‑time degree, which makes certain processes slower or less clear. That said, when support is provided, it is helpful and enables me to progress with my qualification.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
My qualification supports my role well, particularly in strengthening the theoretical chemistry foundation behind the analytical and statistical work I do in R&D. The academic content often complements my day‑to‑day tasks, helping me understand the science behind fragrance behaviour and the techniques I use. While not every module aligns directly with my niche area, the overall programme clearly enhances my performance and confidence in the role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes — there are plenty of extracurricular activities to get involved in. Work offers social events, networking opportunities, and cross‑team activities that make it easy to connect with colleagues outside day‑to‑day project work. These activities add a strong sense of community and complement the professional development available in my role.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend Unilever because it offers a genuinely rich learning environment, meaningful responsibility from day one, and exposure to cutting‑edge R&D. The culture is supportive, collaborative, and encourages you to grow—whether through technical development, cross‑functional projects, or unique experiences like fragrance evaluation. It’s a place where you feel trusted, challenged, and able to make a real impact early in your career.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
My main advice is to be curious and proactive. Unilever values people who show enthusiasm for learning and aren’t afraid to ask questions or get involved in new areas. Make sure you can show both your technical interest and your ability to work collaboratively, because cross‑functional teamwork is a big part of the culture. Finally, be yourself — the company really values authenticity and people who bring their own perspective and energy to projects.
