Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
In my role as an insurance apprentice account handler, I focus on the internal administration and technical support. My day typically involves processing policy documents, speaking with the markets, and ensuring everything meets regulatory and company standards. I work closely with colleagues and insurers, helping gather details, prepare documentation, and support the team with the operational tasks that underpin the account‑handling process.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy my programme because it gives me the chance to build solid insurance knowledge while developing practical skills in a structured, supportive environment. The mix of learning and hands‑on work keeps things interesting, and I like being able to see my progress as I take on more responsibility. The role gives me the chance to develop solid technical knowledge while contributing meaningfully to the team. Overall, the programme feels genuinely valuable, professionally rewarding, and well aligned with the career path I’m working toward.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I’ve gained a number of new skills throughout my programme and strengthened several existing ones. I’ve developed a much deeper understanding of insurance processes, policy administration, and regulatory requirements, which has improved my accuracy and attention to detail. My ability to work with internal systems and handle technical information has grown significantly, and I’ve become more confident managing workloads and prioritising tasks effectively. I’ve also built on my communication and teamwork skills through regular collaboration with colleagues and insurers.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
My programme is well organised and structured, which makes it much easier to balance my workload with my development. I’m given a dedicated study day each week, which allows me to focus on my qualification without distractions, and the training I receive is clearly planned out so I always know what I’m working toward.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I get a great amount of support from my employer and it makes a real difference to how smoothly the programme runs. There’s always someone willing to guide me through new tasks, check my understanding, or help me build confidence as I take on more responsibility.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I get a great amount of support from my trainer. They offer clear guidance on what I need to focus on, provide structured resources, and check in regularly to make sure I’m on track. If I have questions or need clarification, they’re easy to reach and always willing to help.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I feel that the qualification I’m working toward supports my role really well, because it gives me the technical grounding I need to understand the processes I use day to day. The modules help explain the reasoning behind insurance practices, terminology, and regulations, which makes the tasks I handle feel clearer and more structured.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There’s always something going on at work, so it’s really easy to get involved in things outside your day‑to‑day role. There are volunteering opportunities, sports activities, networking events, and plenty of social bits that bring people together.

Yes, I would recommend Howden to a friend. It’s a supportive place to work, with a positive culture and plenty of opportunities to get involved, develop your skills, and feel part of a wider community.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Howden?
A simple but genuinely helpful piece of advice I’d give to anyone applying to Howden is to just be yourself. They value people who are authentic, open, and willing to learn, rather than those trying to fit a certain mould. Showing enthusiasm, being honest about what you know.
