Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I would take part in daily stand-up calls with my line manager to reflect on the previous day/week, ask for support, and decide what to do for the next day. Then I would do a few hours of independent working- whether learning, programming or creating new ideas. I would often have meetings with the whole team at some point, and also had meetings on Teams to discuss important matters with my Charity Challenge team.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes absolutely! I was given a task that has been implemented in an existing system and will continue to be used once I have left. I decided to find extra work to add to my workload in order to keep busy and learn new things. I handled sensitive data and used lots of different technologies that had to be kept secure. I think by being given responsibilities it really makes the placement feel important and more valued.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
In my personal opinion, I would be inclined to agree. I have definitely developed my knowledge of key technical skills by learning brand new languages and making use of new programs.
It has enabled me to practice, develop and improve my confidence skills, through communicating with lots of staff and presenting to small and big groups. I do also feel that by using applications like Teams, Outlook and Miro it has expanded my professional skills.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
A lot! I received support from the early careers teams (like Sarah!), my manager, my team, my line manager and the other interns. In particular, one member of my team spent a whole day with me pair programming, and helping me to understand a particularly difficult subject.
Every Thursday there was a drop in session for the team I was in, and on Mondays there were drop in sessions for the Charity Challenge which were super helpful.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
It was really outstanding. Just through walking through the office you can literally see Centrica's core values in every person. Everyone I had contact with was friendly, kind and always happy to help me with any questions, queries or problems I had. It was really surprising to me as I did not expect hat from a corporate environment. The atmosphere in he office is a pleasant and happy one, it makes you more motivated to come in and work.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
10/10. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, and I would recommend it to anyone. I think that going into the office, and having the option to stay at home (via the FlexiFirst scheme) is a really brilliant scheme and allows people to choose what they want to do. It makes the atmosphere in the office much more enjoyable as you know everyone has chosen to be there. I also massively enjoyed the technical sides, and developing my technical knowledge.

What advice would you give to others applying to Centrica
Do it! The application process is quite long, but the whole experience is definitely worth it. When you get in, absolutely make the mot of your time here, talk to everyone and make connections. The Assessment Centre is daunting but a good experience. Day one, I would suggest bringing plenty of smiles- and be prepared to say who you are to about a thousand people! I would have loved to have known that everyone is in the same position of being absolutely terrified.
