Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As a claims apprentice, I deal with members and clubs claiming against their policies when a loss occurs. I usually mediate between policyholders and insurers, or sub-brokers and loss adjusters. I am involved in providing expert advice regarding if a claim is valid under their policy, paying attention to any conditions, warranties or exclusions in the schedule and wordings. I also work with my team to tailor our claims processes for new and existing clients.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
Howden has been excellent at making me feel welcome and getting me settled in. I have made so many connections, not just in Howden itself, but within the industry. The apprenticeship programme has been fairly smooth with a decent provider and a trainer who is knowledgeable. There are always opportunities for me to learn and grow and I am always encouraged to push myself in new ways.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have developed my interpersonal skills greatly while talking to industry professionals and providing advice to policyholders. Furthermore, my attention to detail has been enhanced through reading policy wordings and schedules. I have even improved my mental health, stepping outside my comfort zone and tackling my anxiety.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme is generally well structured. Our early careers team have been pivotal to making sure I reach goals and targets set out in my apprenticeship and providing support with any issues or challenges I face. Our learning provider has supplied me with an individual learning plan and also has quarterly meetings with my manager so that she can stay up to date with my studies and exams and track my progress.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I am immensely lucky to have such a supportive team. My manager is extremely understanding of the weight of my studies and also helps deliver training on anything I am unsure of.
As well as this, the early careers team are excellent at keeping in contact and making sure any issues are heard and raised.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
My training provider has been very supportive when it comes to any extra help I need, whether it be content related or making sure i get my access arrangements in place for my exams. I am always able to contact him and he replies in good time with all the information needed.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
Much of the qualification relies on learning and demonstrating proper market conduct which is helpful from a compliance perspective as well as come across professional when liaising with policyholders, sub-brokers and insurers.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are such a vast amount of opportunities at Howden. Whether it be the social clubs (e.g under 30s), the networking events, team holiday parties and even charity sponsored events, there is always something to do and ways to meet new people!
