Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

On a day-to-day basis, i assist engineers with tasks such as setting out, taking site measurements, monitoring construction progress and ensuring work is carried out in line with design drawings and health and safety standards. This helps me gain hands-on engineering experience while learning how major infrastructure projects are planned and delivered
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy being involved in real construction activities and seeing how engineering designs are implemented on site. The programme also helps me build my technical knowledge, confidence and understanding of how large-scale civil engineering projects are managed.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have improved my understanding of engineering drawings, setting out, and taking lead of a team. I have also developed my knowledge of construction processes and health and safety on large infrastructure projects. In addition, working with engineers and site teams has helped me improve my communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Being on a HS2 project the programme allows me to learn from experienced engineers and gradually take on more responsibility, which helps me build my skills and understanding of civil engineering and large infrastructure projects
How much support do you receive from your employer?

My employer provides guidance, training, and opportunities to gain practical experience on site. They ensure i am supported by experienced engineers and supervisors who help me develop my technical knowledge, understand construction processes and build confidence in carrying tasks out.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I receive strong support from my training provider while working towards my qualification. They guide me through coursework, provide technical advice, and carry out progress checks to ensure my learning complements the practical experience i gain on site.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

My qualification through my training provider directly helps me perform better in my role. The technical knowledge and skills i gain, such as understanding engineering principles, reading drawings, and applying construction methods, make me more confident and effective on site. It ensure that the practical tasks i carry out are done accurately, safely and in line with professional standards
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes, there are extra-curricular activities i can get involved in at work. As a Galldris Ambassador, I support community activities, career events and school visits. This is an important part of my development, helping me build confidence, communication skills and engage with others beyond the site. In addition there are occasional team-building and professional networking opportunities, which allow me to connect with colleagues across different projects

Why?
They provide excellent support and training for apprentices, giving hands-on experience on major infrastructure projects like HS2 and Sizewell. The team is friendly and supportive, and opportunities such as being an ambassador and attending events. Its a great environment to learn, grown and gain real engineering experience
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Galldris?
I would advise anyone applying to Galldris to be proactive, enthusiastic and willing to learn. Show an interest in construction and engineering, and be ready to work on site while taking on new challenges. Being reliable, asking questions and engaging with the team, both on site and in training will help you make the most of the apprenticeship and gain valuable skills and experience
