Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Southampton City Council?
My experience at Southampton City Council has been overwhelmingly positive. From the very beginning, I’ve felt welcomed, supported, and valued as part of the organisation. The team I work with is incredibly supportive—there’s a genuine sense of collaboration, openness, and willingness to help each other succeed. It creates a work environment where you feel comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas, and growing professionally.
I’m especially grateful for my line manager, who consistently listens, provides guidance, and prioritises our well being. Knowing that your manager genuinely cares and checks in regularly makes a huge difference in day to day motivation and job satisfaction.
The Council’s flexible working arrangements are another major highlight. They allow for a healthy work–life balance and give staff the space to manage both personal and professional responsibilities effectively. On top of that, the staff perks—ranging from discounts at local places to access to attractions—are a lovely added benefit that helps you feel appreciated.
What stands out most, though, is how much the Council values staff input. Whether it’s through consultations, surveys, or group discussions, the organisation actively asks for feedback and truly listens. It feels like our voices matter and that we are shaping the future of organisational practices together.
Overall, Southampton City Council has been a supportive, inclusive, and genuinely rewarding place to work.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
As a Digital Learning and Support Officer, my main responsibilities centre around helping colleagues across the organisation make the most of our digital tools, learning platforms and online resources. This includes creating and delivering training, offering one to one support, developing user friendly guidance materials and ensuring that staff feel confident and empowered using digital systems in their day to day work. I also play a key role in supporting digital transformation projects, gathering user feedback, and helping shape improvements that make our systems more accessible and effective.
What I enjoy most about the role is the positive impact it has on others. I love being able to help colleagues build their skills, grow their confidence and overcome challenges with digital tools. Supporting people, whether through training sessions or individual guidance, is genuinely rewarding—especially when you see their progress and how it makes their work easier.
I also really enjoy the collaborative nature of the job. Working alongside supportive teammates and a line manager who values wellbeing and open communication makes a huge difference. The role gives me space to be creative, solve problems and contribute to continuous improvements across the Council. Being part of an organisation that actively listens to staff and encourages input into wider practices makes the work even more meaningful.

One of the biggest reasons I’d recommend the Council is the strong emphasis on staff wellbeing. My line manager is incredibly supportive, always listens and regularly checks in with us. You never feel like you're navigating challenges alone. That sort of care and leadership makes a huge difference.
The flexible working arrangements are another major highlight. Having the space to balance work and personal commitments effectively is something I really appreciate, and the Council handles this exceptionally well. The staff perks—from local discounts to access to attractions—are a lovely bonus that makes you feel appreciated beyond the job itself.

When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Southampton City Council?
As a long standing employee, I’ve had the chance to see how the recruitment and onboarding processes have continued to improve over the years, and I’d happily recommend the Council to anyone considering applying. My main advice would be to approach the application with confidence and authenticity. Southampton City Council values people who are genuine, reflective, and passionate about contributing to the community, so showing who you are and what motivates you goes a long way.
It’s also worth taking the time to read the job description carefully and tailor your application to highlight your strengths and relevant experience. The Council is very people focused, and they appreciate applicants who clearly demonstrate how their skills align with the role and its wider purpose.
During onboarding, my biggest tip is to make the most of the support available. From day one, I found colleagues incredibly welcoming and willing to help, and that hasn’t changed. Don’t hesitate to ask questions, seek guidance, or explore the learning resources provided—they’re all there to help you succeed. The induction process is thoughtfully designed, and managers take real care to ensure new starters feel supported, settled, and part of the team.
Finally, be open to the variety of flexible working options and staff benefits offered—they really do enhance work–life balance and help you feel appreciated.
