Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I am a degree apprentice site manager and i was doing this role for my first project. Kier offers rotations through the business so because i work in construction part of kier, i get to experience and learn for 3 to 6 months in a different area. This consists of Preconstruction, estimating, planning, health and safety, site management, design management and quantity surveying. It allows you to develop skills and meet the people across the business but if you are still unsure this is a great way to know what you want to do and kier will support.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy it lots because it varies so much and loads of opportunity with kier and so many projects to get involved in. They also send you to university 4 times a year for 1 week blocks throughout.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt more skills than i though i would by now. Because kier let you work in different roles your communication, relationship building, confidence and so much more grows. Kier also has so many training programmes to get involved in and as an apprentice university helps and supports the skills being developed.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

My degree programme is clearly outlined and what roles i am partaking in. Kier do reviews for progress at the start of each job role when doing rotations and at the end so you would have time to learn and develop the weaker areas. University is also clearly outlined.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

Line managers and mentors help when needed and very supportive and the teams your working in as well,.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

They are very supportive and you learn the main bulk of work at university but it requires a lot of self learning and based of passed experience.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

My qualification helps in some elements but you learn a lot more doing the role and from the people your working with.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

They are soo many extra curricular activities you can get involved in from charity event like football or working on a project, to walking through may with organised walks and bike rides. Lots of networking events and team involving nights out and sports activities there is something for everyone.

Why?

Kier is a great company to develop and learn from experienced people with many different background and experience. They support you with training, any issues and university and it allows you to develop skills. They also think a lot about mental health and there are lots of events to get involved in.
