Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I work in drainage engineering. My role largely involves CAD work - producing drawings and details; data gathering and analysis for reports; undertaking basic designs and calculations; occasionally visiting sites to better understand problems.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
My programme was very enjoyable. Not everything was directly relevant to my day-to-day, but it never could be. It gave me a fundamental understanding of many different areas to better appreciate how these disciplines work together and overlap with my job. It was generally very interesting and engaging with good teachers.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have developed many new skills, including learning how to model drainage systems and develop my project management abilities.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
It is reasonably well organised with a day release system and typically doing two or three modules per terms. Some of the units overlap a little too much, but that is likely to be the case with any course.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My team has always been willing to offer support and guidance if I ever need it. A good number of my colleagues have been through the process before and have experience with many of the nitty gritty elements.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
My work based tutor was fantastic at providing support. The teaching staff were more mixed, with some absolutely excellent, whilst one or two a little less experienced or helpful.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
It has not always been directly related but has provided a fundamental understanding of many disciplines related to my work, so I have a better idea when collaborating with these others.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
2/5
We don't have many events. We have a Christmas party and the occasional badminton. There is a strong discussion about how to improve this, so I am positive it will change.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Kier Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
My team has been very supportive and my line manager has offered support and guidance the whole way. I feel Kier have provided me with a great platform to develop skills and become autonomous in what I do.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Kier Group?
Go for it. I don't think there is any specific guidance outside of that. If you are keen and enthusiastic and ready to learn, they will give you al the support you need.
