Many new skills have been learned through this apprenticeship. There is always something new to learn and being part of projects that will shape the landscape means that no two days will be the same.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The university aspect of the programme is very well structured, although not perfect, you are given the tools needed in order to succeed. Within the organisation the training is structured to a degree, there is always room for improvement however personally if there have been areas that are lacking and addition support is required, I feel confident in being able to approach my colleagues for assistance.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

When first starting out we are given the tools required to carry out our jobs, we are left to get on with our work however should additional guidance be required we are always made to feel confident in being able to approach our mentors for guidance.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Each module at university is different and deals with varying aspects of the job. If our work place mentor is unable to assist with a particular part of the job there is always someone who is capable and will give the assistance required to carry out the learning successfully. We are never left to feel alone when working towards university qualifications.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualification that I am working towards is definitely important and provides real insight into the profession however that being said, the theory does not always reflect the practice. University gives a good understanding of the theoretical way to carry out work however does not touch too much on real world examples of how to carry out the work.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

The company frequently hosts activities outside of work, some events are corporate events however there are also many groups to get involved in. If you have an interest in a sport/activity, there will no doubt be people within your region who also share the interest, you are encouraged to start groups where all are welcome, I am part of some of these groups myself and it helps to make colleagues more approachable as you see them as more than just a co-worker but as someone you can trust to approach.

Why?

I have never worked for a company that treats their employees as well as KIER do. I would genuinely say that they are the best company that I have ever worked for.
