Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Commercial Trainee, learning to manage the financial aspects of a construction site. This involves procurement of subcontractors & some materials, management of subcontractors and financial reporting.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

It is very enjoyable, with a diverse range of exercises and jobs that need doing. The wide range of activities ensures the programme does not become boring. The funded university aspect is extremely useful for professional development.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Almost all skills used are new and useful for the commercial aspect of the construction industry. I also find my IT skills to be greatly enhanced.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

A fixed schedule is in place for which projects and job roles are going to be undertaken as well, inclusive of rotations to experience different parts of the company. This schedule can be easily changed to allow more or less time in individual places or job roles depending on enjoyment and learning.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

A dedicated HR Business Partner is available to arrange all aspects of the programme and address any concerns that may be raised about any aspect. Mentors are assigned on each project to ensure that there is always support on hand, as well as regular line manager check-ins for overarching queries or issues.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
As much information as needed is provided by the training provider, as well as a dedicated apprenticeship coach to address any other queries or concerns. Anything not provided can be requested directly. Only issue is that there is a very large amount of information provided on different modules, and there is a lack of standardisation between modules which can make searching for individual bits of information challenging.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

It provides an excellent theoretical basis for the job role that perfectly complements the work experience gained in the day to day job.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are regular social events hosted both in the main office and on the individual sites. As well as this, there are many networking events that take place that allow you to meet people in other job roles and gain valuable information about the business.

Do not worry too much about being stuck with whatever role you apply for, as if your skills and preferences favour another aspect of the business, Kier will help you grow towards that alternative role.
