Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role since starting Kier on their Quantity Surveyor degree apprenticeship scheme has been very diverse. Over the past 4 years I have been on a number of different construction projects and have undertaken many tasks including; procurement of subcontractors, composing orders, subcontractor account management, monthly payments and completing the cost reporting tasks internally for Kier's reporting procedures.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The programme has been enjoyable and I have really seen the benefit of being in employment and learning on the job while completing my studies along side.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have developed many skills including; high level Excel skills, measurement skills using Bluebeam/Adobe, communication skills, teamwork skills and many more.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Very well organised.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I personally have received great support, which is predominately down to having an amazing mentor who has been willing to spend time teaching me the different processes and guiding me through my daily tasks.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Some of the lecturers at Sheffield Hallam can be really helpful, others not so much, so it massively depends on who the lecturer for a particular unit is.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Provides me with the knowledge and background understanding to why work tasks have to be completed in particular ways.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There is increasingly becoming more social/networking events for both early careers employees and Kier employees which have been really good for building working relationships with people you are not working with everyday.

Kier have been a great company to work for this far. The people at Kier are all very supportive and willing to help you develop as a degree apprentice. The apprenticeship and being able to gain both working experience and a degree at the same time is invaluable and enables you to accelerate your career within the industry.

Be authentically yourself and you will be fine!
