Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am currently a second year Engineering Apprentice at Airbus Broughton. This role entails an 8 month college course where we complete a Level 2 NVQ teaching us all the skills required for an aircraft fitter. We then move onto 3 month placements across the plant in: Manufacturing Engineering, Quality and Design teams - Gaining crucial engineering experience and completing a Level 4 NVQ. My current placement is in a Build Support Role for our Single Aisle Aircraft where we will provide a technical analysis and solution to any production errors. This is all done whilst studying towards our Level 6 Aerospace and Manufacturing Degree accredited by Swansea University.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
Despite a challenging workload with a balance of academic requirements and working a full time job the programme is extremely rewarding. The placement work and projects I can get involved with are very interesting and supportive for my learning.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Before starting my apprenticeship I had no exposure to the aircraft and manufacturing industry. Since starting I have picked u a combination of hand skills and office based skills.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The course can be challenging at times with the short timespan of 3 years and 3 months but it maximises my time on the scheme. By the end of the apprenticeship I will have 3 different qualifications at level 2, 4 and 6 whilst also having industry experience.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My employer gives day release for university where we will do a full day of lectures; additionally we get 4 hours 'study day' to catch up on assignments and exam prep. We have dedicated early careers managers who support us throughout our programmes and are contactable for any support we require.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
To complete my degree this is done at a local college with a dedicated higher learning building - the lecturers are supportive and understand the heavy workload we face.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The qualifications we complete as a part of our programme are all designed to support our learning. The main example of this is our level 2 qualification that allows us office based engineers an insight into aircraft manufacturing and the processes and work that is required.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
At work we have ERGs (Employee Resource Groups), these are groups that host activities such as networking events, social activities and sports events that we can get involved with. As an engineer at Airbus I am also a STEM Ambassador - this gives us the opportunities to host early careers recruitment events and encourage the younger generation to go into STEM fields.
