Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
My role has involved completing multiple secondments across different teams, giving me broad exposure to both project work and BAU operations. On a day-to-day basis, this has included supporting ongoing projects, contributing to operational tasks, and assisting with reporting activities. Throughout these secondments, I have had the opportunity to work closely with various customers as well as senior engineers across Vodafone, which has helped me deepen my technical understanding, strengthen collaboration skills, and gain valuable insight into different areas of the business.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I have generally enjoyed my programme, particularly the learning opportunities both at university and within the workplace. However, I feel I would have benefited even more if my team had been onshore. Having closer, more regular interaction and involvement with my team would have provided additional opportunities for hands‑on experience, collaboration, and development.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Yes, I have learned new skills and developed existing ones. I’ve strengthened my technical abilities by working with multi‑vendor networking equipment and completing the associated training. I’ve also developed my presentation and academic writing skills through university work, which has helped increase my overall confidence.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
Overall, the academic side of the programme was well organised. I appreciated having a dedicated university day that remained consistent throughout, which helped me manage my workload. Although there were times when assignment deadlines were clustered, this was something the learning provider actively improved based on student feedback, which showed responsiveness and willingness to adapt.
In the workplace, my business area went through a major transition, which meant the structure around me was changing. This included team redundancies and a move to a new onshore team. While this made the experience more challenging, it also gave me the chance to adapt quickly, learn from different teams, and develop resilience. My previous team had apprentices from earlier cohorts who were well-positioned to support me, and although the transition was unexpected, it ultimately helped me grow and navigate change within the business.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Overall, I have received good support from my employer. My line managers have been very understanding and accommodating, especially during busy periods when I needed extra time to focus on university assignments. They have always been open to feedback and proactive in directing me towards other teams and key contacts who could help expand my experience.
There were times when it was challenging to get timely responses or make consistent progress, partly due to team transitions and changes happening within the business. However, I did my best to adapt and make the most of the support available. I also used my academic learning to guide how I approached tasks in the workplace. Despite the challenges, the overall support from my managers helped me stay on track and continue developing my skills.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I have received good support from my training provider throughout the programme. The structure of the academic side—especially having a dedicated university day each week—really helped me stay organised and manage my workload effectively. The teaching staff were approachable and supportive, and I felt comfortable reaching out whenever I needed clarification or guidance.
There were periods where assignment deadlines were close together, which added pressure, but the provider responded well to student feedback and made improvements to the scheduling. This showed they were engaged, adaptable, and genuinely committed to helping us succeed. Overall, the training provider played a positive role in supporting my progress towards my qualifications and helping me build confidence in my academic work.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I feel that my qualification has helped me perform better in my role in several ways. The academic side gave me a strong foundation in networking principles and wider IT concepts, which I was then able to apply directly in the workplace. Having regular university days allowed me to build technical understanding at the same time as gaining hands‑on experience.
Working with multi‑vendor networking equipment and completing associated training meant I could connect what I was learning at university with real‑world scenarios. This combination strengthened my confidence, improved my problem‑solving skills, and helped me adapt more quickly when teams changed or when I was given new responsibilities.
Overall, the qualification supported my development by giving me the theoretical knowledge I needed, while also enabling me to apply it effectively in practice. It definitely contributed to my growth and performance throughout the programme.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
There were some extra‑curricular and networking opportunities available, although many of them were centred around the London (Paddington) and Newbury offices where most apprentices are based. As I was located in the West Midlands, this meant that fewer in‑person events were accessible to me, and the alternative—joining via Teams—could feel isolating at times.
However, when I fed this back to my line manager, he took the feedback seriously and arranged opportunities for us to visit different technical teams in both the Newbury and Paddington offices, including the NOC and design teams. This gave me valuable exposure and helped bridge the gap caused by location differences.
In addition, senior management introduced a new initiative to support apprentices across the organisation: quarterly sessions where we could engage in professional development, ask questions to a panel, and participate in wider networking activities. My line manager was very supportive of this, always encouraging us to attend and ensuring we were reimbursed for travel when needed.
Overall, although location created some initial challenges, the efforts from my manager and the wider organisation helped ensure I still had meaningful opportunities to network, learn, and get involved.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Vodafone to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend Vodafone because it offers strong learning and development opportunities, especially for apprentices and early‑career professionals. Throughout my programme, I had access to supportive line managers, exposure to different technical teams, and opportunities to work with multi‑vendor networking equipment, which really helped build my confidence and skills. Even during periods of organisational change, managers and senior leaders were responsive to feedback and took steps to ensure apprentices were still supported and included. Vodafone also invests in structured academic learning, professional development sessions, and wider networking opportunities, which makes it a great environment for growth.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Vodafone?
• Be proactive and make the most of every opportunity. Because Vodafone is a large organisation, there are many teams and specialists—reaching out, asking questions, and showing curiosity will help you gain more exposure.
• Don’t be afraid to give feedback. I found that managers genuinely listened and took action, whether it was about workload, access to teams, or networking opportunities.
• Stay organised with your academic work. The structure is supportive, but at times deadlines can cluster. Keeping ahead will make your experience smoother.
• Take advantage of travel opportunities when offered. Visiting the Newbury and Paddington offices helped me feel more connected and gave me hands‑on insight into key technical areas.
• Use both your technical learning and soft skills. Vodafone values problem solving, communication, and teamwork just as much as technical ability—balancing both will help you thrive.
