Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
As an L6 Software Engineering Apprentice in OSS, I learn-by-doing across the software delivery lifecycle for systems that monitor, orchestrate and assure Vodafone’s networks and services. I will contribute to incident/alerting workflows, integrations, data pipelines and service tooling that help keep our network reliable, observable and automatable.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I thoroughly enjoy this programme, through the exposure of real-world scenarios and being able to implement any learnings right away. The environment is great for apprentices to learn from as there is no assumption that we should know everything, it is inclusive and safe to ask any questions.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I come from a non-technical background, but only 5 months in, I have been able to learn multiple coding languages (Python, Bash, YAML etc) and apply it to work projects. Away from technical skills, I have been able to improve on my soft skills like time-management, organisation and communication to ensure I am putting myself in the best position to learn.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme is well‑organised, with strong collaboration between the company and the academic side of the apprenticeship. However, within your specific team, you may not have a structured learning plan, so you’ll need to take initiative and communicate what you want to learn so the right support can be arranged.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I receive strong support from my employer, and my line manager and team are very open and inclusive. I’ve been invited to knowledge‑transfer sessions and team projects, and colleagues have been fantastic in offering 1‑to‑1 sessions for clarity and reassurance.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
Great support with our designated skills coach, having regular meetings to review our performance. The training provider shares further support to help with academic writing, as well as soft skills to support the workplace. All lecturers are understanding and provide further support when needed.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
Through university, we learn about the past, present, and possible future directions of technology. This broad understanding gives us both a holistic view of technological solutions and deeper insight into our chosen pathways. It also helps us identify potential developments we could apply to real projects at work.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are regular opportunities to get involved in extra-curricular activities. There are multiple mini cubs but also a youth run team that hosts socials and networking opportunities.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Vodafone to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It is a great environment for apprentices, as people are happy to teach and pass on knowledge but also give you space to grow. You are welcomed in to join the team as a full-time member of staff, gaining responsibilities early on.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Vodafone?
Use your skills to add to the team. Just because you are the apprentice, it does not mean you do not have anything to offer. Embrace every challenge, and enjoy the little wins - recognise it is not a smooth uphill climb. Finally, focus on how you conduct yourself as a person, the technical skills can be learnt overtime.
