Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Network Rail?
Network Rail is a fantastic employer. The Operations Management Graduate Scheme is an excellent way to learn many different aspects of the rail industry through placements and getting directly involved in day-to-day operations management. The scheme managers are very supportive, and the company provides a strong suite of benefits, including a flexible working policy.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
I enjoy being able to get involved with placements at stations where you are able to develop skills required for evidence in the Level 4 Passenger Transport Management Apprenticeship. I have also spent time with MOMs, in Control as an Autumn Controller, and I am currently completing a project on metro efficiencies alongside training and mini placements. Everyone I have met at Network Rail has been extremely supportive.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
4/5
I have a loose team although I do not spend a lot of time with them as I am often on placements.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
5/5
I believe NR's pay and benefits package is a fair wage for a Graduate. It would be useful however to have more flexible support on work subsidised travel.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
I believe the Apprenticeship completed alongside the scheme prepares us very well for our next role in network Rail.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
5/5
Whilst on placement, being exposed to railway operations helps build an understanding and skills development.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
5/5
I appreciate the management style of my line manager, as it helps me manage my commitments well. I also have two very supportive buddies who can help with anything I may not be comfortable approaching senior staff with.
How is your work-life balance?
4/5
There is a lot of work travel, and due to being placed in a route different from where I live, my commute to the office is 2.5+ hours each way.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
5/5
I appreciate Network Rail's flexible working policy as it allows me to manage my time well with other commitments. The culture in the office and in the teams I have worked in has been very supportive, particularly amongst the graduate cohort.
How would you rate Network Rail initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
5/5
NR has a variety of EDI groups and I believe supports inclusion very well.
How would you rate Network Rail CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
5/5
As someone who is environmentally conscious, it is pleasing to see Network Rail's commitment to climate and the environment, including Net Zero. I also like the variety of volunteering opportunities on offer.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Network Rail to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Network Rail is a great employer, who care about your wellbeing and want the best out of you. This is reflected in their flexible working policy. The salary and benefits package is fantastic for a graduate, and it is a scheme which genuinely prepares you for your future career.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
5/5
The role has exceeded my expectations.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Network Rail?
One word of warning, when you apply for locations, you may not be offered a location you have applied for. However, a lot of the work involves placements where you will be travelling and working at different locations to your base office.
