Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
A quantity surveyor protects a business financially and contractually. Usually what I do in a day is, update commercial trackers, communicate with subcontractors, gather substantiation for payments, attend webinars, price up quotes, etc.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy the programme. NGB blends the college and work aspects well, currently I do around 4/5 weeks in work in London, then I do 1 weeks worth of college in Leeds. You are well supported as an apprentice.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt a lot about quantity surveying, it expanded on my tendering and estimating unit I did at college. I have also learnt a lot specific to mechanical and electrical engineering. My soft skills have also improved whilst working at NGB.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
My programme is well structed as I mentioned before. I do 4/5 weeks at work, then 1 week at college in Leeds. The Leeds break works effectively as you are able to separate work and college work, it gives you real time to focus on assignments, and ask for advice from your tutors.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a lot of support from my employer. I have reviews every 3 months with my line manager, and I do reviews with my apprenticeship lead, line manager and commercial manager every 6 months. Whenever I have concerns, it is easy to raise them and get support immediately.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
The tutors at college are amazing. They are very helpful and treat you like adults, rather than being at secondary school again. Whenever you need advice or feedback, they are always happy to help you.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
Everything I learn in college is relevant to my role. I have 4 current unit, these are: quantity surveying in practice, construction case study on affordable housing, construction environment/ how things have evolved and finally a unit on Revit and CAD.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are lots of activities to get involved. Apprentices do a development day every year which consists of fun teambuilding exercises. There's also a lot of volunteering/ fundraising events, some of these include, running events, golf days, dog walking, etc. NGB gives you 2 paid volunteering days a year to use.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend NG Bailey to a friend?
Yes
Why?
NGB is a very supportive company which takes pride in it's apprentices. I have always felt supported in both my personal and career development. I have lots of opportunities available to me despite only being a year into my apprenticeship, I am excited to see what the future brings with my career in NGB.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NG Bailey?
Research the company before the application! You do not need a background in mechanical/ electrical engineering to get this apprenticeship as they will teach you everything. Be eager to learn, and show your character through the interview/ assessment centre.
