Winter Vacation Scheme Student Review

The scheme combined information sessions, social events, and time in your practice area to understand the type of work trainees do and complete tasks set by your trainer. The sessions introduced different departments such as Corporate M&A, Global Financial Markets, Disputes, and aspects of firm culture, including Diversity & Inclusion. The sessions were delivered through a mix of Q&A, practical workshops, and presentations. The programme also included social events, such as a celebration dinner and various networking lunches and breakfasts.

Overall, the scheme was well structured and made it easy to understand the firm’s work. It balanced practical workshops and departmental introductions with ample opportunities for networking, asking questions about your interests, and completing trainee-style tasks in your practice area.

Working closely with my department enhanced my drafting, time management and attention-to-detail skills, as I completed typical trainee tasks. The workshops and networking sessions also strengthened my communication, collaboration and confidence when engaging with professionals across the firm. Overall, the scheme helped me build greater commercial and technological awareness and improved my ability to work effectively in a professional, fast-paced environment.

The culture was incredibly welcoming and inclusive. People were not only happy to answer any questions but also volunteered their time, encouraging us to reach out for coffee chats throughout the week. In my department especially, both trainees and associates regularly checked in, made sure I felt comfortable, and ensured I understood my tasks. They were always willing to have lunch with me and genuinely made the environment feel supportive and approachable.

I thoroughly enjoyed the insight. The scheme was engaging, supportive, and well structured. It offered a nice balance of practical work, learning sessions, and networking opportunities allowing us to gain a multifaceted understanding of the firm. We were encouraged to make the experience our own, which I appreciated, with the freedom to be as proactive as we wanted in speaking to people and getting involved in different activities. The welcoming culture and willingness of people across the firm to share their experiences made the week both enjoyable and motivating.
