Vacation Scheme Review

The scheme offered a genuinely varied and insightful day-to-day experience. Each day began with presentations from different areas of the team, which allowed me to gain a holistic understanding of the department’s work and how its different strands fit together. I was also seated with my trainer daily, who set tasks for me to work on and guided me through the team’s ongoing matters.
Alongside this, I arranged coffee chats with other members of the firm to learn about practice areas beyond the one I was sitting in, which helped broaden my understanding of the wider business. The scheme was also well supported socially, with several events throughout the week, including a dinner for the vacation scheme attendees alongside partners and the HR team, as well as a farewell tea and cake gathering.

Understanding the business and the potential roles available was one of the most valuable parts of the scheme. The daily presentations were especially helpful in giving a clear picture of the firm’s work, ranging from finance to M&A, disputes, and even exciting growth sectors like the firm’s sports practice. Together, they gave me a genuinely holistic view of the business and the breadth of opportunities within it.
We also had an in depth presentation on the training contract structure and the SQE process, which helped clarify the path to qualification. Throughout the week, I was able to build on this by speaking with trainees and other members of the firm during networking sessions and coffee chats, which gave me practical insight into what these roles look like day to day.

I definitely developed a number of skills over the course of the scheme. My networking skills grew significantly, as I became much more confident initiating conversations and building rapport with people across the firm. I also strengthened my commercial awareness by gaining a clearer understanding of how the different practice areas fit together and contribute to the firm’s wider strategy.
In terms of working skills, I improved my ability to balance multiple deadlines. Throughout the week I had to manage tasks set by my trainer alongside the daily presentations and the AI project we were given, which helped me refine my organisation and prioritisation.

The company culture and general atmosphere were excellent. Everyone I met was genuinely friendly, approachable and willing to help, whether that was answering questions, offering guidance or sharing their experiences. I felt very comfortable throughout the week and could definitely see myself fitting in with the culture of the firm

I really enjoyed the vacation scheme. I loved getting to know the other students on the programme as well as meeting people across the firm. The experience as a whole was incredibly positive and has only strengthened my interest in pursuing a career in commercial law at A&O Shearman.

My main piece of advice is to thoroughly research the firm before applying. Make sure you understand not only A&O Shearman’s strength in finance but also its excellence across other areas, so you can speak confidently about why the firm appeals to you. I would also recommend looking into the firm’s AI tools and innovation strategy, as this comes up frequently throughout the recruitment process.
Most importantly, be yourself. The firm values authenticity, so focus on showing who you are, what motivates you and why you are genuinely interested in training there.
