Vacation Scheme Attendee Review

The scheme was a perfect balance of lecture style workshops, hands on work, and socialising with my peers! Day-to-day, we started with 2-3 hours of sessions led by different practice areas of the firm - which gave us an important insight into the variety of work available to a trainee. After this, we typically worked with our trainers completing research and drafting tasks, alongside socialising with the team and meeting people for more informal 'coffee chats'. Each day was completely what you made of it, and we were fully encouraged to reach out to people who we wanted to learn more from, with the support of the fantastic HR team the entire time.

The scheme gave a comprehensive overview of all of the practice areas at the firm through the structured workshops, which opened my eyes to the areas of law I could consider training in. HR also supported us in reaching out to any teams we were interested in, so this also provided more candid insights into the business. Finally, we had a full break-down of the process from the vacation scheme all the way to associate level, which allowed me visualise my career progression in full.

Most of my skill development came from my time with my trainer, as I was trusted to complete hands-on research and drafting in actual client matters. This independent, but supported, work was an incredible way to jump into the tasks expected of a trainee. More broadly, I have left with a much more well-rounded sense of commercial awareness through the sessions, as I can now tangibly grasp what each team at the firm does. Finally, we were able to engage with the innovative legal-tech the firm uses - which was truly special!

Incredible! Naturally, you may be apprehensive entering a global elite law firm, but there was genuinely nothing to be concerned about. Everyone I encountered at A&O Shearman was willing to engage with me through emails, coffee-chats or even advice about finishing my 3rd year at University. It was such a positive experience, and I never felt like I was burdening people for their time, as they truly wanted to help you make the most of your experience at the firm.

I had such a wonderful time on my Vacation Scheme, and I couldn't recommend it enough. I felt fully supported throughout the week, yet had the independence to shape my days around my interests, and was actively encouraged to do so. Getting to complete real-life work has confirmed that not only am I aspiring towards the right career, but that I can actually complete the tasks expected of a trainee. The scheme has given me confidence, new-skills and some incredible friendships too!

Most importantly, be yourself! It is so important that your genuine interest in the firm shines through in your applications, as they are looking to understand your personal drives and motivations - not what you think they want to hear. The assessment day is challenging, but remaining positive and open-minded will help you succeed.
