Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As an intern, you are set dynamic tasks, such as a research project, helping with calculations and reports, interaction with clients and data mining. You gain experience and understanding on how an organisation works within the pension industry. Within the first 3 weeks, you also receive technical and software training and after the 3 weeks, you put the training to use and gain a better understanding behind calculations and processes.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
There is just the right amount of responsibility for an internship. I am involved in a variety of different projects, which led to completing many different tasks , from data mining to transfer value calculations. There was a lot of exposure to business through large and small sized pension schemes, as well as for corporate and trustee clients. Everyday had different tasks to do and the majority of tasks were meaningful and useful to the client.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have developed a better understanding on how pension schemes run, due to internal training and gained first-hand experience working with data and doing calculations independently. I have also developed my organisation skills, especially when I am working with many different clients and completing different tasks. I have also gained better understanding behind calculations and why they are needed. Another skill which has been developed is my communication skills, especially within a professional working environment.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Within the first few weeks, I was given a lot of support from my line managers, training presenters and buddies, along with catch-ups with managers, seniors and buddies to help me settle in and ensure that I am enjoying my experience. When I began to independently work and was introduced to the wider team, everyone I worked with on projects and client teams were extremely supportive and very easy to talk to.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
There were many social events and activities arranged every week, from bowling to softball as well as going out for drinks and every event encouraged interns to join. There is a great atmosphere at the office, everyone enjoys working with one another and there is a great mix of diversity and cultures. There were also a lot of charity and voluntary initiatives from charity runs to cycles and many webinars on causes such as dementia.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend WTW to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to WTW
Try not to be anxious or nervous when interviewing since the interviewers are very supportive and have been in your position before so understand the process and how nerve-racking it can be. Also the work environment is very friendly and to not be afraid to talk to senior staff. Another helpful tip is that WTW has a lot of opportunities and roles and the career path is more exciting than you first think.
