Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As a volunteer store assistant, my role is to support the mission of the Kaim Shop at RGU, a student-led, on-campus initiative under Go Green that promotes sustainability, reduces environmental waste, and encourages a circular economy. My contribution helps ensure the smooth running of the shop and strengthens engagement within the RGU community.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
• Educating and engaging with the RGU community about the purpose of the Kaim Shop, the environmental benefits of re-use, and the impact of participating in the initiative.
• Providing customer service, assisting students and staff, answering enquiries, and creating a welcoming environment.
• Managing the shop floor, ensuring items are organised, displayed properly, and accessible.
• Sorting, recording, and processing donations, including assessing item quality and preparing them for distribution.
• Supporting general charity-shop operations, contributing to an organized, efficient, and impactful service.
Overall, my role combines sustainability advocacy, customer interaction, and practical operational duties that help drive the goals of the Kaim Shop and the wider GoGreen initiative.

Yes. Through my volunteer role, I have developed several key skills. I also improved my customer service skills, particularly in handling inquiries and supporting a diverse community. Additionally, I gained new organizational and retail-related skills, such as sorting donations, managing stock, and maintaining an orderly shop floor. This experience has also enhanced my teamwork, problem-solving, and awareness of sustainability practices.
I would rate the training as very good. The guidance provided at the start of my volunteering helped me understand the shop’s goals, operational procedures, and my responsibilities.
