Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Latham & Watkins?
I've really enjoyed it so far. My colleagues are fantastic and I learn a lot each day.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
I've completed seats in three different teams so far and have enjoyed all of them. Typical responsibilities include keeping track of matter progress, drafting and reviewing documents, conducting research and occasionally assisting with the administrative side (e.g., billing). I've found that as you become more trusted you are given significant autonomy to progress things yourself, which I find particularly rewarding. I also enjoy drafting a lot.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
5/5
Because a big part of the role is keeping track of matter progress and helping to coordinate the team accordingly, I've found that you can quickly become an essential part of the team. In return, team members are always on the lookout for interesting tasks that will push me and/or expose me to a new area.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
5/5
I get paid well and can order dinner if working late.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
The role is very similar to that of a junior associate, with a gradual progression of responsibility over the course of each seat and over the two year training contract. You feel well prepared to start as a qualified solicitor within one of the firm's practice areas upon qualifying. I am also developing lots of transferable skills (e.g., in terms of communication and project management).
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
5/5
At the beginning of each rotation, there has been formal training of a high-standard which was helpful for getting my bearings and understanding the bigger picture of what each team does. However, I've found that I have learned the most through my day-to-day role, because of the variety and the level of responsibility I have been given.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
5/5
While I am given lots of responsibility, my supervisors have always been keeping a close eye on what I am doing and are on hand to answer any questions I have if I am not sure.
How is your work-life balance?
4/5
It is a busy job, but weekends are almost always free and I am able to go to the gym in the mornings before work. It is difficult to make plans during the week because hours can be unpredictable, but there is a degree of flexibility so it is possible (particularly if it is important and you let people know).
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
5/5
I have found people to be very friendly, welcoming and patient. Trainees are currently expected to be in the office four days a week minimum, but I prefer to come in every day because I find I work better and learn more (and it is nice to see people).
How would you rate Latham & Watkins initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
4/5
Generally good, and the affinity groups are excellent. My only caveat would be they did the Trump thing earlier in the year, but luckily so far it looks like this hasn't had much of a tangible impact on how things are run.
How would you rate Latham & Watkins CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
5/5
The firm focuses more on pro bono (meaning actual legal assistance), of which there is a lot, and it counts towards billable hours targets. However, there are also various CSR initiatives which are good too.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Latham & Watkins to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend it to a friend, but only if they are up for a challenge. It is an intense role, but a very rewarding one if you are interested in the work and want this sort of lifestyle.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
5/5
I feel like I got a very accurate impression of the firm from completing the vacation scheme.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Latham & Watkins?
Just do your best. Also, think carefully about whether you actually want to do the job - it is not something you can do and enjoy if you aren't fully committed.
