Industrial Placement Engineer Review

I oversee road maintenance and pavement design. I assess damage to the surface and propose treatments to be carried out while consulting data and standards in order to guide me through the the process.

I was taught how to perform a task and then entrusted to perform it independently whilst able to rely on my team members should I require assistance. After learning a task I was able to do entire stages of the process independently and to the same degree of responsibility as any of my colleagues.

I have learnt the process involved in pavement maintenance and design while using standards and methodology that I had learnt in theory whilst at university. Furthermore I became part of an engineering team and understood how to aid my team and how they may aid me should I require assistance.

I was able to rely on my colleagues, mentor and boss should I require any assistance and throughout the placement they explained how the work I was doing fitted into the work process for the whole scheme. I was guided throughout by my boss who was very approachable and aided me whenever any issue arose and offered advice.

Kier is very focused on creating an welcoming and friendly environment, furthermore everyone was very approachable whenever I had any queries. My office also had a casual clothing policy and flexible work hours whilst also allowing the choice of working from home or going into the office.

I mostly enjoyed my time at Kier due to very friendly colleagues as well as the many opportunities to learn diverse topics. As with any job however there are always times where you might find some work to be not extremely interesting however throughout my placement my boss kept switching the work I did on a constant rate in order to get me as much experience as possible.
