Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was given a good level of responsibility throughout my internship. Although I was working as an intern, I was trusted to take initiative in research tasks, contribute my own ideas during project discussions, and independently analyze data related to AI use cases. I was also responsible for preparing summaries of findings and suggesting improvements for data organization and visualization. This autonomy allowed me to develop both my technical and problem-solving skills while working in a collaborative research environment.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes, I developed both new and existing skills during my internship. I strengthened my research and analytical skills by working with real datasets and exploring how AI could be applied to improve data accessibility and visualization. I also gained hands-on experience with collaborative research tools, data organization techniques, and technical documentation. Additionally, I improved my communication and teamwork skills through regular discussions and progress meetings with my supervisor and peers.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received excellent support and guidance throughout my internship, both from the University of Aberdeen and Rock River Research. The university provided clear structure, regular check-ins, and resources to help me stay on track with my goals. At the company, my supervisors and team members were always approachable and willing to share insights, which made it easy to ask questions and learn from their experience. This combination of academic and professional support created a very positive and motivating learning environment.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture at Rock River Research was very open, collaborative, and supportive. Despite being a research-driven environment, the atmosphere was relaxed and encouraging, which made it easy to share ideas and experiment with new approaches. Everyone was approachable and valued teamwork, so even as an intern, I felt included in discussions and decision-making. The startup-style culture also made the work dynamic and engaging, with a strong focus on learning and innovation.

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I really enjoyed my internship at Rock River Research. The experience was both engaging and rewarding.
I had the chance to apply what I’ve learned in my studies to real research projects while also exploring new areas in AI and data analysis. The supportive environment and collaborative culture made the work enjoyable, and I genuinely looked forward to contributing each day. What advice would you give to others applying to Rock River Research
I’d advise future students to make the most of the opportunities offered through the University of Aberdeen, especially the internships and programs like the Santander Open Academy. These placements are a great way to gain real experience while being supported by both the university and industry professionals. I’d recommend approaching the internship with curiosity and initiative; don’t be afraid to ask questions, take ownership of tasks, and explore new areas of interest. The more you engage with the process, the more you’ll grow both professionally and personally.
