Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

As an actuarial consulting summer student, I got to see the type of work that defined benefit pension scheme actuaries did. A main part of the experience was completing cash equivalent transfer value calculations, as these form the basis of DB actuarial work. I also wrote CETV basis reports and reviews. I also got involved with governance work drafting up client documents.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was given client work which I was responsible for, under supervision. I had the perfect balance of supervised work and independent work.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have learnt lots of skills using Microsoft software (such as excel and PowerPoint). I also gained more knowledge of how defined benefit pension schemes work.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Everyone was friendly and we all had a similar mindset meaning that I got along well with everyone else on my team. The company atmosphere was great.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I thoroughly enjoyed my internship as it provided me with a great insight into what working as an actuary is like, and what working life is like in general.
