Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at BAE Systems?
Excellent, after some small hiccups. Professionally I am contributing directly to a very large engineering project and I feel included and accepted in the role. There were some interpersonal issues, but these were dealt with very professionally using a highly robust policy.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
Developing engineering level 5 requirements and contributing to a Model Based Systems Engineering project and process refinenment.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
5/5
As Graduates, we are guarded by a safety net of professionals, but we are treated the same as other junior engineers and are able to hold discussions with people outside of our immediate team.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
5/5
Except for not receiving pay rises inline with non-graduate staff, our package is fully and well rewarded.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
I'm doing work at the forefront of the field of Systems Integration Engineering, which will inform the future capability of the company. This is an excellent starting point with a wide range of career paths open to me.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
5/5
Training is integral to our job role, indeed a minimum of 5% of our time is dedicated to it, with the actual time being closer to 10%.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
5/5
Other than my Sub Team Lead and Line Manager, we have access to an HR chat facility, ethics helpline, Graduate Council, Graduate Leads, coach, mentor and Union. They have all proven their worth in my time here.
How is your work-life balance?
5/5
Although there is a blanket allowance of 20% overtime on my current project, it is closely monitored and my Line Manager checks in with me regularly to ensure wellbeing.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
5/5
Although there are some areas of poor behaviour, linked to habits from the past, the culture is very welcoming and we are empowered to challenge behaviours we don't like. Employee Resource Groups provide an excellent outlet to discuss certain issues.
How would you rate BAE Systems initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
5/5
I chose BAE because of their advertised equality and diversity policies. They are well advertised and enforced. I feel empowered to challenge the behaviours of others without fear of retrobution.
How would you rate BAE Systems CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
5/5
The company is very active in the local communities, even though such work (due to the nature of our business) is not well publicised.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It a company reinventing itself, where innovation and empowerment are key to their future success.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
5/5
It exceeded expectations. I thought we'd be in the background, watching but not contributing. The exact opposite is true.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Show your true self, don't try to be what you think they want to see. We are encouraged to be individuals. Also, do your research. Look at the press and websites about the work the company is doing and the areas you are interested in.
