Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at BAE Systems?
It's been great, I've had many opportunities to stretch my skillset and develop new skills alongside my main role. I also rejoined after a placement into a new team which was great to see how other teams within Naval Ships operate.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
Every stage of the software development lifecycle from start to finish, some aspects of systems engineering and integration, software demonstrations and demonstration support, project management, team leadership and portfolio leadership.
I love the technical side of software engineering, getting to work with colleagues to develop the best solution for a given scenario/project.
I also love the leadership work I've been doing as stretch work where I lead a small software team of graduates to design and develop proof of concept software. As a result of this, I now lead the portfolio that project sat under and I'm now responsible for 6 projects within an initiative's maritime portfolio.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
5/5
I am encouraged to speak up when I think things are wrong/we can improve the way of working, my experience is welcomed when making key decisions and I am overall trusted with multiple projects simultaneously.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
3/5
Compensation package is good and we get many great benefits. Most valuable to me is health/dental cover & gym discounts.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
4/5
I feel I am building many skills from technical all the way to leadership, however sometimes it does feel like they are tailored to BAE as a company rather than processes multiple companies follow, I feel like I need exposure to other ways of working/engineering too to become the best engineer I can be.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
3/5
I completed a lot of training to begin with but not much since, however if I need to complete any, there are mechanisms in place to support me.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
5/5
My line manager always has time for me and is always very supportive and keen to help me progress. Their line manager is also the same, very keen to help me go where I want to.
I also have a mentor and coach to help make critical decisions through my career.
How is your work-life balance?
4/5
Flexible working is amazing and allows me to adjust my working hours to suit me, there are some cases where things become inflexible but not often.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
3/5
How would you rate BAE Systems initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
3/5
How would you rate BAE Systems CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
4/5

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It's a great company to work for and the work you do is really meaningful. Sometimes some of the work may feel old/legacy, but we are encouraged to challenge process and find better was of working.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
4/5
I knew what I was coming into as I got the job after completing a placement, however joining a new team was unexpected but absolutely welcome, it's been great.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Better regular communication and information regarding security clearance processes - many join the company without clearance which causes issues, these should be addressed and identified before joining to ensure grads can get on with their work from the beginning.
