Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at BAE Systems?
A cutting edge tech firm with a lot to offer in the engineering world. Does sometimes get really slow and tedious given the size of the organisation and the nature of the work, though this sometimes goes beyond what I'd expect and just seems slow and difficult for no reason. Progression is highly encouraged and fostered but the extent to which you get this seems to be luck of the draw with what team/area you land in when you are hired. It is good that the company offers some very unique challenges to tackle and some solid training resources. The nature of the job however does come with some parts that at times can be quite morally difficult to confront given the current nature of events around the globe. This is not to say that all work offered is unfulfilling, but I would encourage the company to have a more open and honest dialogue about some of the more challenging aspects with the work done.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
There is a ample chance to take on leadership roles and expand beyond your comfort zone, there is also a good chance to mentor and educate others offering a good sense of satisfaction and feels meaningful. The day to day challenges definitely require out of the box thinking so are very well suited to someone who enjoys a good technical puzzle.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
2/5
I've mentioned previously the luck of the draw nature with the role you land in, myself personally I feel somewhat under-utilised. I'd recommend that the company tries to align the work it does with the graduates skillset better and ensure that there is enough meaningful work ready for them upon entering a role.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
4/5
Pay is decent for an entry level engineer, pension could be slightly better. Share schemes and discounts are a nice added bonus to take advantage of.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
3/5
There is definitely a lot of opportunity to progress and become a world class engineer, but it feels more often than not that I have to actively fight against slow and lethargic processes to make this happen which can at times be exhausting.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
4/5
It's definitely a challenge to come out of university, especially as a physicist and get to grips with the engineering world. This is the only gap I would like the company to acknowledge as I feel that the jump to professional engineer for non-engineering students can be quite big. Apart from that, it's clear the company is making a big push for upskilling so ample chances there.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
3/5
Management support could be better, it feels lacking at certain points especially during busier periods. Mentor scheme and buddy scheme are excellent editions are very valuble.
How is your work-life balance?
4/5
Flexi-working and Flexi-time are excellent to achieving a health balance with the hybrid approach being much appreciated to help me focus on certain tasks in certain environments. Balance can sometimes break down during busy periods, though this is technically compensated with flexi-time build up.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
3/5
There is definitely a growing vibe of change within the organisation and it's clear that the company are making a push towards the modernisation and recruitment they promised. There is however still some lingering sense of "We've always done it this way" which can feel demoralising at times and almost like you're not being taken seriously.
How would you rate BAE Systems initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
4/5
It's very positive to see movements in the company to support LGBT and wellbeing, I do believe it should be talked about more as it's a good thing to have for those who may not feel seen.
How would you rate BAE Systems CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
3/5
This is a very tricky one given how things currently are both environmentally and politically. There is a push for net zero which is excellent to see, but a lot of work is going to be needed to even come close to accomplishing this. As mentioned previously, a more honest and open dialogue surrounding the work done especially for those internal to the company would go a long way in helping with current circumstances.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I'd recommend this to an engineer looking to kickstart a career at a high level. There is a lot on offer here to skill yourself up to a high standard and work on some cutting edge projects and challenges.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
3/5
Job title doesn't match what I currently do, seems like integration engineer was a bit of catch all term.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Use the STAR method, show genuine passion for engineering (bonus points if it's aviation!).
