Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Coutts?
Over the past year, I’ve had the opportunity to immerse myself in the Coutts Wealth Relationship Management Graduate Scheme, and I’m pleased to reflect on a highly positive and rewarding experience.
From the outset, I’ve felt supported by my colleagues and mentors, particularly my graduate manager whose guidance has been instrumental in helping me navigate the complexities of wealth management. The structured rotations and exposure to different areas of the business have given me a strong foundation in client relationship management, financial planning, and the broader strategic goals of the bank.
I’ve also appreciated the emphasis on professional development, with access to training sessions, industry insights, and networking opportunities that have enriched my experience and helped me grow both personally and professionally.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
Main general responsibilities have included client liaison.
Role 1 - Outbound support in Coutts 24. Client liaison when they had a large credit balance, booking annual reviews, closing dormant accounts.
Role 2 - Client Director Assistant. Client liaison for general banking and wealth needs. Sending ad hoc statements, organising mortgage close downs, liaising with 3rd parties, organising gifts.
Role 3 - Associate in Estate Planning. Drafting of Will and Lasting Power of Attorney Advice Letters. Sending LPA section 11s to attorneys, conducting LPA signing ceremonies.
Role 4 - Financial Planning trainee. Attending client meetings, taking meeting notes, learning technicalities.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
5/5
My role gives me regular opportunities to contribute in a meaningful way, and I feel genuinely valued by my team. I’m trusted with responsibilities, encouraged to share ideas, and supported with feedback that helps me grow.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
4/5
Overall, I feel fairly compensated for the work I do, and the package reflects the value placed on graduate talent at Coutts. The base salary is competitive, though there’s room for improvement as responsibilities increase and performance develops. The perks and benefits are a real highlight – the range of discounts available is extensive and genuinely useful, and the inclusion of medical and dental insurance adds meaningful value to the overall package.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
My financial planning training at Coutts has equipped me with a strong technical foundation and a client-focused mindset that will be invaluable throughout my career. Learning to assess client needs, build tailored solutions, and navigate complex financial scenarios has sharpened both my analytical and interpersonal skills. This experience is helping me develop the confidence to advise clients with clarity and empathy, and it’s laying the groundwork for a future where I can build trusted relationships and deliver long-term value. As I progress, I’m excited to apply these skills in increasingly strategic roles within wealth management.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
5/5
I’m developing a broad range of skills that are essential for a successful career in wealth management. These include technical competencies such as cashflow modelling, investment analysis, and understanding tax-efficient strategies, alongside key soft skills like client communication, relationship building, and professional judgement.
The training has also deepened my knowledge of regulatory frameworks and ethical standards, helping me approach client scenarios with confidence and integrity. This combination of technical and interpersonal development is preparing me to deliver high-quality advice and build trusted relationships with clients in the future.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
5/5
HR has been consistently approachable and responsive, particularly during onboarding and key transitions. They’ve provided clear guidance and ensured that administrative processes ran smoothly, which helped me settle in quickly.
My line managers have played a pivotal role in my development, offering regular feedback, setting clear expectations, and creating opportunities for me to stretch and grow. Their support has been both strategic and personal, helping me understand how my work contributes to the wider goals of the team.
My grad manager has been a valuable sounding board, offering insights from their own experience and helping me think through challenges with a long-term perspective. Their advice has helped me build confidence and navigate the complexities of client work.
My buddy was especially helpful in the early months, providing informal support and helping me understand the day-to-day culture of the firm. They made it easier to ask questions and feel part of the team from the start.
How is your work-life balance?
4/5
Overall, my work-life balance has been positive throughout the graduate scheme. The role offers a great deal of variety and learning opportunities, which keeps me engaged and motivated. I feel supported in managing my workload, and there’s a strong emphasis on wellbeing across the organisation.
That said, the long commutes can occasionally make it challenging to maintain the ideal balance between work and personal time. While I’ve found ways to manage this—such as using travel time productively or prioritising rest and exercise—it does sometimes impact my ability to fully switch off and recharge.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
5/5
The organisational culture at Coutts is inclusive, professional, and genuinely welcoming. I’ve always felt encouraged to contribute, ask questions, and grow within a supportive environment. The values of integrity, client focus, and collaboration are clearly reflected in the day-to-day interactions across teams.
There’s a strong emphasis on diversity and inclusion, with open conversations and initiatives that promote belonging and respect. The atmosphere is positive and driven, with a shared commitment to excellence and continuous improvement.
Hybrid working is well-supported, offering flexibility while maintaining strong team cohesion. This balance has helped me manage my workload effectively and maintain a healthy rhythm between professional and personal commitments. Overall, the culture fosters both high performance and personal wellbeing, making it a great place to start and build a career.
How would you rate Coutts initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
4/5
Coutts demonstrates a strong and visible commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. The culture encourages open dialogue and respect for different perspectives, and there are several initiatives that reflect this ethos. From internal events celebrating cultural awareness and inclusion, to employee networks that support underrepresented groups, the organisation actively promotes a sense of belonging. Groups such as the Employee Led Networks truly highlight how important those in minority groups can feel supported in the workplace.
I’ve particularly appreciated the focus on accessibility and inclusive working practices, which ensure that everyone can contribute fully regardless of background or circumstance. The training and resources available also help raise awareness and foster allyship across teams.
Being a slower and more visual learner has never been disregarded and I have been supported through my development.
Overall, these initiatives make a meaningful impact and contribute to a workplace that feels progressive, inclusive, and genuinely people-focused.
How would you rate Coutts CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
5/5
Coutts demonstrates a genuine and proactive commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility across societal, environmental, ethical, and community-focused areas. One standout initiative is our B Corp certification, which reflects the bank’s dedication to balancing purpose and profit, and operating with transparency and accountability across all areas of impact.
The volunteering policy is another highlight — we’re given three volunteering days each year to support causes that matter to us personally or align with Coutts’ broader community goals. This not only encourages active engagement with local and national charities, but also reinforces the bank’s values around giving back and making a positive difference.

Why?
The culture is inclusive, professional, and genuinely supportive, with a strong emphasis on personal development and wellbeing. The graduate scheme offers structured training, meaningful exposure to clients, and the chance to work alongside experienced professionals who are invested in your growth.

The stand out for me above all is the culture - you can genuinely speak to anyone in this company, regardless of their position, and this truly highlights to me the camaraderie amongst all staff.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
4/5
While it’s always difficult to know exactly what a role will entail before you start, the graduate scheme at Coutts has largely matched my expectations in terms of the quality of training, exposure to clients, and the professionalism of the environment. The recruitment process gave a clear overview of the programme’s structure and values, which have been reflected in my experience so far.
That said, the day-to-day responsibilities can vary, and some aspects of the role have evolved as I’ve progressed and taken on more responsibility. One of the real strengths of the scheme is the opportunity to explore different areas of the business, which has allowed me to broaden my understanding and tailor my experience to my interests. This flexibility has been invaluable in helping me shape my career path and gain a well-rounded view of wealth management.
