Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Virgin Media O2?
Enjoyable, well-structured, good culture
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
Rotations of 6 months each
Business Analyst role - introduction to Agile, gathering requirements, stakeholder management - it was a good way to get exposure to more people throughout the business
Forecasting and Data Analytics - building forecasting models in Python, analysing KPIs - I really enjoyed the technical aspect and improving coding skills
Insights Analytics - using various data sources to come up with insights - enjoyed working closely with SLT and using coding as well as dashboarding skills
Cloud Engineer - developing and provisioning GCP resources - enjoyed learning Cloud technologies, and working in a fast paced team on the technological forefront, great exposure and visits to Google.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
4/5
Sometimes it can feel difficult to contribute as a graduate having to learn from scratch every 6 months, it does need to be self driven to a large extent, it also depends on the kind of work done by the team.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
5/5
Pleased with my benefits, good healthcare cover that covered physio sessions for injuries. Perks have included concert tickets to O2 venues which is great for me.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
4/5
Sometimes more focus would have helped in a certain direction, at the same time the wider exposure has helped me understand what i want much more than when I started. Using mentors to your advantage can be key, but this is also self driven much of the time.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
4/5
No formalised structure to gaining skills in the teams themselves, needed to do a lot of that myself and not having dedicated time for it made me feel like I need to deliver rather than learn. Good soft skills training sessions as well as sessions about the industry which are a huge advantage to me.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
5/5
Very strong support, really impressed me. Line manager for each rotation, buddy in the team in the first rotation, a graduate buddy, mentor and head of year throughout as well as future careers team. A mentor that was more focussed on my goals (data) would have helped me a bit more.
How is your work-life balance?
5/5
Hybrid working gives a good work life balance as well as good mentality in technology roles (clocking off on time usually) and supportive managers as far as I have experienced.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
4/5
Relaxed office vibes, feel free to be myself, lots of groups supporting different people (people of global majority, disabilities, LGBT+, women, carers). Its definitely an important point for the company which is great to see and get involved in. Hybrid working, expected around 2 days a week in office/8 days a month.
How would you rate Virgin Media O2 initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
5/5
As above, effort has been made, a lot is run by volunteers within the company who are great, lots of initiatives.
How would you rate Virgin Media O2 CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
4/5
Volunteering platform and 5 days to volunteer a year is great. Sustainability is important for a tech company, some good initiative such as phone recycling etc would love to hear more shouting out about some of these.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Virgin Media O2 to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Overall, good pay and environment to work in, benefits are good and there is support and room to progress. Technology graduate scheme is well run and well regarded in the company.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
3/5
I expected to have the option of more technical roles especially coding/software engineering, there were more project manager roles for graduates than technical at some points which was the main drawback for me.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Virgin Media O2?
Be yourself, and consider VMO2 values and how you fit in with them.
