Summer Student Review

Assisted the ILC team with their Actuarial function. Was spread across both Life and GI teams providing help, whilst also working on two personal projects which helped us understand more about becoming an Actuary.

We had complete autonomy across the two projects we completed, with the ability to reach out and ask for help left to us on the whole. However, members of the team spent time with us each providing us with a fresh perspective on the work we were completing.

Developed my Excel skills, including the use of VBA code to automate processes.
Helped reinforce my presentation skills, with access to see how different individuals communicated ideas across the team.
Learnt how to write some code within R.

Provided a lot of support. We had two catchup/review meetings with our line managers and with the head of the internship programme. This allowed us to relay feedback on the work that we had previously done and then gain new exposure to work we hadn't done to that point.
Various individuals within both teams also reached out to us regularly to guide us through specific pieces of work or to give us some clarity on the work we had done.
Having a mentor, as a regular point of contact, was also helpful as any concerns that had to be raised could be done so easily.

Company culture was one of inclusivity and positiveness. Felt very comfortable being myself within the team environment and, on the whole, individuals were very accomadating and easy to talk to.
Felt that people were very proactive with everything that they did and this filtered down from senior leadership.

I really enjoyed coming to work and my time at BW. Culture was great.
