Summer Intern - Actuarial Consulting Review

During my internship, I gained hands-on experience in a range of actuarial tasks, including calculating cash equivalent transfer values and actuarial factors such as commutation and retirement factors. I contributed to the preparation and drafting of accounting disclosures, carried out data checks, and worked with valuation spreadsheets. I was also involved in governance and risk-related work, writing client-facing communications such as letters to pension scheme members, and delivering presentations to both the wider team and smaller groups.

Yes, after some basic training on the different areas of pensions actuarial consulting, I was given work to complete on my own and then hand back to a senior who would look through it and check it was correct and if not they would go through it with me so I understood for next time. I was dropped in the deep end but with a huge support network which allowed me to excel.

I developed my excel skills massively, the majority of actuarial work was using excel so I improved hugely in that area. I also developed my public speaking and presentation skills as I had multiple opportunities to talk to the team or to smaller groups. I developed my teamwork skills as well as the internship involved a lot of talking to colleagues.

I received so much support throughout the internship, I was taught all the basics very thoroughly and whenever I asked for help someone on the team was happy to talk me through my task.

Very friendly, everyone is out to help each other. There is a relaxed yet professional atmosphere in the office which I like. There were also many social activities to get involved in outside of work which I liked.

I enjoyed my placement so much, more than I was expecting to actually. It was so insightful into an actuarial consulting career and everyone I met was so nice.
