Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at National Grid?
It's difficult to summarize into a small box. This grad scheme was a step into a new life for me, I met some truly amazing people, had the opportunity to do things I never thought I'd be capable of and felt like learned more in the 18 months I was on program that I did in the previous 5 years. The early careers team at National Grid is truly exceptional.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
Way too many to list out, the highlights were -
1) Creating and coordinating a 3 day event featuring senior leaders, ERG leads and members of the group exec to further the cause for DEI in the organisation
2) planning a team offsite to Boston focusing on development and community outreach
3) being responsible for landing business critical change efforts across my area of the business
4) Working with a team responsible for shaping the direction of my business are of the next 5 financial years
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
5/5
At National Grid, graduates aren't on probation or given busy work. You are a full time employee of the organisation from day 1 and are expected to perform as such. Obviously with lots of support and guidance, but you are contributing meaningfully through all the work that you do.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
5/5
Similar jobs I've seen pay almost 10k less, I feel very blessed to have the renumeration package that I do.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
Its shown me what I want to do for at least the next 3 years, which in the current landscape of job market is better than most.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
5/5
I was recently sponsored by the organisation to take part in a training course with a price tag of multiple thousands of pounds, and all travel & accommodation was also covered. National Grid grad alumni are intended to be future leaders of the organisation, and they understand the value of investing into them.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
5/5
All of my placement manages and permanent managers were excellent.
How is your work-life balance?
5/5
I feel like I have a full life with a job on the side rather than the other way round.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
5/5
Everyone has been welcoming, inclusive and overall very kind in my experience. Very flexible WFH policies
How would you rate National Grid initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
3/5
Things have changed recently due to external factors and are going in a direction I do not support, however I believe the heart of the organisation is still in the right place.
How would you rate National Grid CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
5/5
By its nature, NG has to be tapped into communities and has whole teams focused on giving back to communities. Additionally, every team is encouraged to incorporate volunteering time into their team offsites/large meetings.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend National Grid to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Pay, atmosphere, flexibility, opportunities. It is everything I wanted out of a first job, and I intend to stay long term, as do many individuals.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
1/5
My role did change a lot through the grad scheme, however it was always for the better.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to National Grid?
Industrial placements, understand the energy system, understand NG's unique place in the markets as a monopoly on transmission assets, understand your own strengths and focus on those, have a vision for the future.
