Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at National Grid?
It has been a nurturing experience. Definitely a good transition between university and industry. It was packed with training that prepared us for our role and beyond. The scheme itself was well planned with the broadening placement to widen our horizon and gain additional skills. The teams were supportive and was always understanding.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
Main responsibility of the role included liaising with different teams to progress different products that support the project.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?

They gave me meaningful work and ensured that I had my own pieces of work for my level that still contributed to the work everyone was doing. They also ensured I didnt overwork and that I took my lunch breaks and took mental and physical health very seriously.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?

A company car was provided for travel and help with accommodation costs. There was also other benefits such as private health insurance packages and increased pension.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?

This role covered standard trainings as well as allowing us to go beyond and complete additional trainings that would progress our chartership. And even off the scheme we are given opportunities to progress with a competency chart to prepare further.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?

I was definitely learning a lot of new skills across the scheme at a regular rate

How is the support you receive?

line managers and business co-ordinators were so supportive and were always ready to help at any time. I had a grad buddy who was also great at suggesting work and how to approach people for information.
How is your work-life balance?

It's a good work life balance. however there is a lot of travel involved depending on your role.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?

The atmosphere is casual and welcoming and friendly. In regards to hybrid, everyone is understanding of any issues with network and importance of taking breaks
How would you rate National Grid initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?

They value DEI highly and try to have a DEI moment in every key meeting and events.
How would you rate National Grid CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
5/5
They have a lot of initiative for volunteering, i.e. encouraging each team to complete a certain no. of hours of volunteering. They also match funding for any money raised for charity.

Its a healthy friendly work environment with a lot of initiative to encourage you to progress such as appreciate points which links to rewards and it's good pay proportionate to the role and skills

This role was slightly different to what I expected but it was very flexible to change and tailor it my needs for career progression.
