Hardware Intern Review

I interned in the Solutions Engineering group, the team I was on builds internal subsystems for benchmarking of system level hardware. I spent a large part of the internship conducting a design investigation comparing 2 different types of interconnects. This involved working with RTL config files, synthesis flows, and YAML-based tooling.

The project work was technically complex, but I was given the right amount of responsibility to learn without being overwhelmed. I was picked up tickets and made a few decisions early on, but most of the overall flow and direction of the project was led by my tech lead. That structure worked well for me.

I had never used Git or linux before working here so it was quite a nice opportunity to learn them.
I also became more confident working in a hardware development environment, navigating synthesis flows and editing RTL + YAML configs as part of a working build process.

The support structure was excellent. My tech lead was my first point of contact, but if they were on holiday (inevitable during the summer), I could always reach out to other engineers on the team, everyone was approachable. It was also made clear from the beginning that if I had any issues, I could speak with my manager, and beyond that, the intern program manager, but I did not have any issues. It felt like a tightly woven support network, which made asking for help easy.

Amazing company culture. All the people at arm are friendly, supportive and approachable. There was no shortage of arm funded events, some for the interns, some for the grads and some for the different teams inside of arm. You could go to any of then which was a good for meeting new people in and outside of your department. On top of that there was loads of interns so it was very easy to meet people your age.

Excellent summer all round, learnt a lot and met some really great people.
