Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Developing and integrating advanced digital engineering solutions for current and future aerospace applications.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Throughout my internship, I was given ample opportunities to showcase and develop my practical engineering skillset. This proved instrumental in me quickly convincing colleagues I could be trusted to deliver meaningful value add to the team, which I appreciated greatly. By the end of my internship, I had become very autonomous in self-assigning work to further progress projects/tasks.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I underwent multiple training sessions on how to use and interact with various digital engineering toolsets (CAD, PLM, etc...) from a design and materials engineering perspective. These training sessions were extremely useful in learning how to use aforementioned digital engineering toolsets, but did place a time blocker on being able to contribute meaningfully to the team until access was fully granted - access was fully granted after approximately 4 weeks.
The internship also enabled me to further enhance my effective communication skills, presenting to audiences of varied technical subject matter expertise and size.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Plenty. I was personally very comfortable with the support provided by my team day-to-day and did not require too much assistance from Early Careers. However, when specific guidance was requested, a conclusion was reached by the end of the day.
The Early Careers team provided routine communication to all interns and placement students via the following communication streams: 1-to-1 Teams messages, regular emails and bi-weekly meetings.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Exceptional. Everyone was extremely welcoming, friendly, respectful, inclusive and open-minded to change - in my limited industrial experience, the latter is crucial to generating a positive general atmosphere. All colleagues treated with equity and made aware of the different diversity initiatives and inclusivity opportunities through online training courses regularly promoted by the company internally.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems
Be authentic and don't feel uncomfortable talking about why you believe you are a prime candidate for the role. It's about selling yourself, making it known your subject matter knowledge is top-draw and your working values align with the 8 main behaviours (see https://careers.baesystems.com/life-at-bae-systems/our-values) the company is looking for in all candidates.
Also, top tip, express your core interests and main passions at each stage of the application to maximise your chances of being assigned in the area of the business best suited to you - this is a joint decision between Early Careers and the hiring heads of the different internal disciplines (depending on business need).
