Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I was part of the Mission Systems Architecting and Concept Integration team, working within the team to develop MBSE (Model-Based Systems Engineering) methods using the Cameo Systems Modeler Software.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, I was given a summer project to work on with the other two interns within the team. The findings within this project will directly contribute to the BAE Systems programme that the departments is working within. Alongside this I was expected to complete the daily tasks of my colleagues and had as much responsibility as them with regards to workload.

I was given adequate support by the team, who allowed me to shadow them to gain a good understanding of the tasks they complete. The team were also there if I had any questions with regards to how I completed daily tasks to ensure the quality of my work and to keep it in line with what the rest of the department were doing.

Although the department I was put in may not have been my first choice, I was still able to get stuck into the work and enjoyed the opportunity to develop useful industry and soft skills.

What advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems

'Aeronautical Engineering' is a broad job title and you may be put in a department that uses completely new skills to what you have come to know in your uni studies. Keep an open mind and just try and get as much out of the internship as you can, as it will really help to develop your career and industry/soft skills.
