Software Engineering Intern Review

I worked as a Software Engineering Intern. I worked on a project that involved adding a feature to my team's system.

Yes. Often with internship project, teams give their interns isolated projects that can be useful as research or prototype project but that are often not used in production. At Bloomberg, my project is something that is requested by clients and was not at the top of my team's priorities so it was given to me. So I was given a big responsibility in the sense that my work was used by my team's clients directly.

At a technical level, I learned golang which I didn't know before. I was lucky to have a teammate who had very in-depth knowledge of Golang so he taught lots of best-practices, golang patterns, and general advice.
In terms of soft skills, I was given loads of opportunities to present my work and collaborate with other people through presentations and shadowing so I can confidently say that I got better at communicating and public speaking.

At no point did I feel clueless or directionless so I think I received good guidance and support from my mentor, team lead, and team in general. It wasn't too much guidance either to the point where I wouldn't improve so overall I received the right amount of guidance.

In Engineering, the culture is Excellent. No micromanagement. No crazy high expectations. Plenty of smart and knowledgeable teammates from whom you can learn. Personally, that's the kind of environment where I thrive.

We were given enough opportunities to network with the other interns. There were plenty of internship events too. So it was great.
